SANNY DE QUEPEM - A TRIBUTE

Sanny de Quepem - A Tribute

Sanny de Quepem, a 8 times Kala Academy's "Best Singer Award winner", and
well known Konkani stage singer and composer died yesterday evening (9th
November 2007) in Kuwait. Arrangements are being made to fly the mortal
remains to Goa.

Born in 1951 at Onsnimadem, Cuncolim, Salcette and was baptised "Cruz Sanny
Vaz", he is the eldest among 11 children. His family moved permanently to
reside in Quepem in 1952. He did his primary education at Guardian Angel
High School, Sanvordem and later as a boarder at St. Anthony's High School,
Monte-de-Guirim, and continued at Pope John XXIII High School and Holy Cross
Institute in Quepem.

Here's a brief of an interview with www.goa-world.com published on the
Gulf-Goans e-Newsletter:

His first steps on the stage was for an English play titled "Ali Baba and
His Forty Thieves" for the annual social gathering, and later in the play
"Man from Jericho". He enacted the role of a damsel in both presentations
at Monte de Guirim. He also participated in the school choir as well as in
cultural programmes. His favourite liking was to sing songs and doing
imitations/ mimicry. He composed his first song "Sounsarachea Adnixt" at
the age of 10, and he sang it repeatedly for almost a decade on several
occasions. Sanny studied Automoble Engineering at ITI, Formaguddi and
joined "Agencia Sequeira (Leyland Co.)" in 1975. In search of better
prospects, he travelled to Saudi Arabia where he worked until August 1998.
After a gap of three months, opportunity again knocked on his door, and he
landed in Kuwait and joined a Japanese Automobile firm, and continues to
reside since. It was in 2000, he once again took to the Konkani stage for
Laurent Pereira's drama and since have composed and sang his own songs and
also assisted his colleagues (be it prompting, direction or revising
scripts).

Sanny remembers his earliest performance in "Vepari Veniceacho" (Merchant of
Venice) - a Konkani play translated by Miss Amelia Gomes and directed by
Peter Dias where he played a comedy role. He acted in every drama that took
place in Quepem or in the surrounding villages for Konkani tiatrs. It was
at this junction he started his career with the professional directors like
Jess Fernandes, along with Hortencio Pereira, Salvador, Natty de Navelim,
Nora, Cajetan de Sanvordem, and C. D'Silva. This was the turning point for
Sanny when he was auditioned for singing at the All India Radio (AIR),
Panjim when he was recording for Jess Fernandes Konkani radio recorded
plays. For a brief stint in Bombay (Mumbai) in 1975, Sanny sang at
Banghwadi when he was introduced by his cousin (who played bass) to Paul
Romy who staged a musical show.

Before flying to Saudi Arabia, Sanny acted in his home village for Felix
Pereira's tiatr "Rogtak Rogot Visronam" and finally at Colva (1977) for
"Doganch Puru" written and directed by Nelson (Nelson-Anthony-Conception
fame). For the annual Kala Academy tiatr competitions, he was rewarded for
his dedication towards singing Konkani songs and have acted twice for Ceasar
D'Mello. Even while on vacation he participated in the Konkani singing
competitions in 1986 and won the award as the Best Singer for the eight
time.

A man of few words, he humbly states "I do not consider myself as an actor,
but can convincingly do small roles. I am good at singing and composing
solos". On and off, he is seen on the Konkani stage in Kuwait as part of a
duo or a trio songs combination. At last week's Konkani drama of Rosary
Ferns' "Bhurgim - Mai-Paichem Sukh" his song saluting the work of "Aya"
(Maid) received a thunderous applause, as well as for his acting as a
mentally challenged boy. His song "Kazar" in Rosary Ferns' "Raag" Konkani
Album has been well received. Sanny recalls that apart from tiatr he sang
for a Hindi orchestra (songs and medleys), as well as crooned for a dance
band "Young Challengers" for some time. He is thankful to Mr. & Mrs. Albano
Pinto for introducing him to writer-director Laurent Pereira, for whom he
expresses his gratitude for giving him a big boost.

Sanny can recollect with sharp precision events he had witnessed in his
younger days including the happenings during the pre and post liberation
years in his village during his schooling days. When time permits from his
hectic office routine, Sanny writes for the Gulf-Goans e-Newsletter under
the caption , as well as other articles on Goanet and The Goan
Forum. His well composed songs on social themes including "Immigation to
England", "Mog" are well remembered by the audience."

----

Sanny de Quepem produced his first Konkani CD album titled "Saibinnicho
Tisro Segred" in 2005 which has been claimed as 'an exceptional work' in
recognition of the composition, lyrics and specially his choice of music,
and his second album "N.R.I." in August 2007.

Sanny de Quepem also worked in Saudi Arabia. He also acted in T-Bush's 1st
Konkani e-cinema 'BLACK'. Kuwait-based Konkani tiatrists and singers will
always remember Sanny de Quepem for his support for them before and during
the staging of their tiatrs/musical shows/dramas - be it prompting, script
re-writing or songs composition.

Goa-World.Com Team (Kuwait) joins his friends and colleagues at Mustafa
Karam Co. (Suzuki) to express their heartfelt condolences to his mother,
Mrs. Lourencina Pacheco Vaz, wife Meera, son Mivron, daughter Streisand, and

KONKANI NOT A DIALECT OF MARATHI

Lately our cyber comrades are discussing concerning our Maim Bhas “Konkani” whether it’s a dialect or not.

Related to the same subject in 1999 Mr. Derrick Pinto from Mody Street – Mumbai wrote on “GOA TODAY” August issue on page 4 & 5 this following Letter to the Editor. I’m positive many of you will be surprised to know the details which many of us just ignore, due to which many have even criticized and abused our Konkani.

The other day a Maharashtrian friend of mine remarked, “Konkani is a dialect of Marathi. That is why Konkani does not have its own script.” This set me thinking. I am a linguist and I am interested in language and linguistics. I arrived at the following conclusions: If tongues were to be graded on a scale of 1 to 10, with a full fledged language like Hindi, Marathi, etc. placed at 10 and any dialect at 5, Konkani would find its place at 7.5: Not 5, hence not a dialect and not 10 hence not a fully developed language.

Why so? Why could Konkani not become a fully developed language?
The reasons are obvious. People used Konkani only for oral communication but when it came to writing, the people in pre-Portuguese Goa wrote in Marathi. During the Portuguese reign, the Christian converts used Portuguese for written communication, while the Goan Hindus continued to use Marathi.
As a result of this, the development of Konkani suffered a setback.
Hence, 7.5 instead of 10. But definitely not 5 (a dialect).

Having a script does not decide whether a tongue is a dialect of an independent language. Even English (bestowed with the honour of being an international language) had to borrow the Roman script from Latin.
Russian and other Slav languages had no script till St. Cyril formulated for them the Cyrillic Alphabet (being a mixture of Greek and Roman scripts) and for those who are ignorant, Konkani has not one but 6 scripts – Roman, Devnagri, Kannada, Malayalam, Bengali and Arabic !

Because Konkani is spoken all along the Konkan coast which lies in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Kerala besides Goa.
It is difficult to adopt any one of these scripts for Konkani because in each state, Konkani imbibes the accent and the vocabulary peculiar to that state or region which can be denoted only in that script eg the (e) sound cannot be dented in Devnagri which is possible in Roman (e) or Kannada script (w).

Coming to the vocabulary, as Konkani is one of the several daughters of the mother language Sanskrit, there are bound to be similarities as there are in Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati and Punjabi, or Bengali, Oriya, Assamese. So this cannot be a ground for labeling Konkani as a dialect of Marathi. Even the syntax among most Indian languages is more of less similar. Hence, it is safe to conclude that while Konkani may not be as advanced as Marathi, it is not as under developed to be considered a mere dialect.

It is pertinent to recall that Kemal Pasha of Turkey changed the script of Turkish from Arabic to Roman. According to him, both Turkey and Turkish would develop if the Roman script was adapted. Personally I feel the same holds true for Konkani in Goa too.
And I am not saying this because I am a Goan Catholic but because circumstances so warrant. Four hundred and fifty years of Portuguese rule, using the Roman script for writing Konkani, the language’s pronunciation and accent modified over the centuries, makes it difficult for us now, to be writing in the Devnagri script.
If Konkani is to develop, it will do so only if the Roman script is adopted.

While on this, a special mention must be made of the valuable contribution made by the Vauraddeancho Ixtt in the development of the Konkani language. To write Konkani in the Roman script was taught to us by the Portuguese.
Hence, they followed the Portuguese (Latin) rules of orthagraph (spelling) eg Using ‘c’ or ‘qa’ instead of ‘k’ ‘x’ for ‘sh’, the grave, cedilla, circumflex and tilde accent and avoiding ‘w’ and ‘y’.
Some Newspapers like the “Goa Times” circulating in Bombay used this style of spelling. Eg. ‘Corrn’ instead of ‘Konn’ ‘quitem’ for ‘Kitem’ and so on.

The Vauraddeancho Ixtt adopted certain rules for spelling Konkani words and this, consistently over the years of decades, This consistency gave a certain stability to Konkani orthography.
It is widely accepted, recognized and used eg in liturgical works by the Church, etc. and for this standardization, the Vauraddeancho Ixtt deserves a big award from the Konkani speaking people for its valuable contribution to the development of Konkani by giving a definite shape.
A regularized spelling for Konkani’s vocabulary. A contribution over the years consistently and unstilted. Editors may come and go, but the crystallization has set in and this makes the paper stand out with authentic spelling.

But there is a flip side too. Over the years, the vocabulary has undergone a drastic change. Try comparing an issue of the newpaper of the 1970s with one of today. While the spelling (orthography) has been standardized, the language has become more and more Marathisized. Authentic Konkani words
have come to be replaced by Marathi derivatives eg ‘fikir’ instead of ‘usko’ ‘khali’ for ‘rito’, etc and this pains a true lover of the Konkani language.

Agreed, we need to develop Konkani, but not this way. Do we have to Konkanise Marathi words and use them?
Eminent linguist, Dalgado, who is accredited with writing the first Konkani grammar and compiling the first Konkani dictionary, had, after much research, come to the conclusion that ”Concanim nao e o dialecto de Marathi”.
He knew better!

Best wishes to all, Viva Konkani.

Habit is either the best of servants, or worst of masters.
NATHANIEL EMMONS.

I feel that a discussion of habits, both good and bad, is essential. However, many of the things I would like to say pertaining to habit, really belong within the realm of psychology and psychiatry. I am neither a psychiatrist nor a psychologist, so I don’t think it would be wise to get in those areas. However, for what it’s worth, here are my thoughts on the subject of habits.

First of all, as the quote at the head of this page says, habit can be a wonderful servant. It can save you much time and effort, and make things in general much easier for you. There is another saying that goes, “A man’s fortune has its form given to it by his habits.” And I believe that there is a lot of truth in that. If you can train yourself to acquire good habits of health, recreation, prompt decision making, learning and work, you will almost surely form the habit of success and happiness.

On the other hand, the worst and heaviest load you can weigh yourself down with a bunch of bad habits. These are easy traps to fall into, but quite another matter to get out of. Horace Mann said, “Habit is a cable. We weave a thread of it every day, and at last we cannot break it.”

There have been volumes written on methods and procedures for getting rid of, or breaking bad habits. One authority says that you’ve got to keep deliberately repeating the bad habit, its believed that it does work in many cases, it is also easier said than done.

In recent times much has been said of hypnosis as a panacea for eliminating bad habits. It has reputedly cured people of the habits of smoking, fingernail biting, overeating and insomnia. Here again, if supervised by a doctor this method may bring results. However if hypnotism does help, it is for a short period of time only. The habit manages to return in full force unless you keep submitting to hypnosis. Or another bad habit often takes the place of the one you just got rid of. If you stop smoking via hypnosis, you may find yourself biting your nails, if you stop overeating via hypnosis, you may become a smoker, or smoke more than you did before.

I’d like to emphasize that I think the best way to stop petty bad habits to REALLY WANT TO. People who complain that they can’t stop smoking would stop if they truly wanted to. Most of them don’t because they enjoy smoking, it’s a crutch that they welcome, and so they continue using it, you may posses countless habits but for a moment just ask yourself if you really want to give up your bad habits. I think you’ll agree that in most cases you enjoy them.

I think that many irritating habits are retained because we don’t realize that they’re annoying to others, or we don’t know how to go about breaking them, just stop and think of all the habitual things you do. How many of them are offensive? If you want to take a chance, ask your friends. However, you’d best be careful there. William James once said, “We all want our friends to tell us of our bad qualities; it is only the particular one that does so that we can’t tolerate.” Try to replace bad habits with good ones. Erasmus said, “A nail is driven out by another nail, habit is overcome by habit.”

Here is how Alcoholics stay away from liquor one day at a time, they challenge themselves this way: “I won’t drink today. I’m certainly man enough to stay away from it just one day, tomorrow I’ll drink to my heart’s content – but today, I abstain.” Of course, the next day they do the same thing, and finally the battle is won. Don’t give in to those little whispers of temptation like, “Why not?” or “Just this once,” or “This is the last time.” if you fall for these whispers you’re back in the clutches of the habit.

After all, something you’ve been doing for years, and in some cases almost all your life, is not going to be easy to curtail. Don’t expect it to be easy. But if you have habits that have been affecting your health, your popularity, your happiness or chances of success, its about time you decided you really want to get rid of them. I can’t stress that enough – YOU MUST REALLY AND TRULY WANT TO. The fact that they’re not easy to eliminate will give you a wonderful feeling of achievement when you do eliminate them. Mark Twain said that, “ A habit cannot be tossed out of the window; it must be coaxed down the stairs a step at a time.” And you’ll be doing just that once you have made a firm decision.

I cannot stress strongly enough the necessity of the habit of making prompt decisions. Aside from being a terrible waste of time, indecision is a common cause of unhappiness, according to William James, “There is no more miserable human being than one in whom nothing is habitual but indecision!”

Get into the habit of trying to make other people comfortable, think of their petty problems instead of your own, and you’ll conquer another cause of unhappiness – shyness.. Being shy is being uncomfortable and uneasy and self conscious, and it’s merely a case of worrying about what others think of you. Once you make it a habit to be interested in others and think of their comfort, you won’t have time to think of yourself. Just remember that basically everybody is thinking of himself and how he looks to others. Everyone looks for awareness and approval from his friends and acquaintances, so you are not alone. Once you realize this, you’ll have no reason to be shy, we’re all are in the same boat.

Well, these have been some of my thoughts and ideas on habits. If you’ve found something worthwhile and fitting for you personally, I’ve accomplished something.

Best wishes to everyone.
