We may go to bed the night before weary of crowds and rush and dozens of last-minute chores, and fed up with the whole business. And then we arise on the day itself to find ourselves transformed almost as remarkably as Scrooge was, and without any ghostly assistance. If we have small children we find that we love them, even though they wakened us at dawn. The sense of family unity becomes something to be newly cherished. We greet our friends with uncritical affection. Our hearts go out to all our fellow men, and we wish them well. We do not do these things because we are compelled to or because tradition says we ought to. We do them simply because the spirit of Christmas is upon us. Peace and good will, familiar words of the Christmas story, suddenly become positive and meaningful. The good will recedes, the peace is disturbed, and we go back to the strivings and the differences of everyday life. But the spirit of Christmas does not disappear. It is a part of us, part of our heritage and of our national as well as individual behavior. Sometimes it seems that we forget, in our zeal for progress and improvement, that we are a decent, kindly people. We seem to forget how good a life most of us have, and why we have it. It is right that we should try to improve that life and share its goodness more evenly. But in doing that we sometimes tend to emphasize our disagreements and to take our blessings and our virtues for granted.

The Christmas season is a good time to remember that we live our lives on Christian ethics as well as on political justice, built upon the Christian belief in the worth and dignity of the individual. That belief is absent this Christmas in modern times. In some countries, the brotherhood of man has been replaced by government edicts of suspicion, betrayal and class hatred. In others, conformity and obedience are demanded by a program whose goal seems to be a drab uniformity masquerading as social equality. And even in our own country there are people who would have us emulate the one system or the other. We have not done so, and let us give thanks for it. Let us look about us and within us and count our very palpable blessings. Let us remember that, for all our shortcomings, we embody for the rest of the world the charity and generosity and good will that are the essence of the Christian and the Christmas spirit. Christmas is not an institution or an holiday of one particular country. But we have patterned our best aspirations after its meaning until it has become not only one day in our year but, in a sense, our way of life.

(End)Goa-World.COMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02905034224348483211noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2023348135057904193.post-83256709652828176762009-07-29T03:06:00.000-07:002009-07-29T03:09:35.453-07:00<img style="display:block; FernandesMeet the Producer-Director of Konkani Film "DOLLA"
- IGNATIUS D. FERNANDES

Good news for all the Konkani lovers. Yet another Kuwait-based Goan has envisaged to carry on the Goan tradition of keeping the Goan culture alive and this time, it's another Konkani full feature film tilted "DOLLA", written and directed by Ignatius D. Fernandes. The entire shoot of this film has been done in Kuwait. Alluring music has been composed and meticulously selected for "DOLLA" keeping the Goan taste of melody, music and rhyme in mind. Ignatius hails from the picturesque village of Sancoale, Goa-India and proudly says: "I have great expectation from this film. I’ve tried my best to do justice to the script".

A brief intro about the Producer-Director:
After obtaining his Degree in Computer Engineering (APTECH), he successfully undertook the IATA Diploma courses. Cinema was something out of his thoughts as a career or profession option, then.

Ignatius fondly remembers during his childhood days, when his dad, John C. Fernandes, who worked in Kuwait used to get Konkani Video Cassettes, along with all the goodies and presents. He still vividly remembers the names of some like “Hanv Vatt Chuklo”, “Kitem Hanvem Kellem”, “Doth ani Dennem”, among scores of other Konkani dramas which his mother Succorina Fernandes used to treasure, keeping them immaculately cleaned and packed. He confesses though that he was not too much fond of them during that time. Ignatius recalls "I guess it was due to the attitude of insignificance of our mother tongue we felt around us"! When he stepped into adolescence, a likeness towards Konkani grew within him. I used to hear all the Konkani audio cassettes. "I even to the extend to clean the fungus on the VHS cassettes and watch the same dramas once I shunned to view", he shyly recalls.

Around 2004 when Konkani home-made and amateur videos started to bloom, a desire to make his own Konkani songs album VCD was felt by him. He fondly adds, "I learnt the techniques and ideas used in film creations, production as well as the finer aspects of filming. I met some professionals, exchange lots of thoughts and views and with their help planned out my first Konkani VCD project. After 3-4 songs were filmed, fate had something else in store for me. "I landed in Kuwait on a work visa and had to depart from this field". The wish of fulfilling his 'maiden' project was sacrificed as his job and other priorities came in the fore.

It was during the same period that his brother, Joywin, also a die-hard Konkani lover, established himself and set up his own banner “Home Video Production” in Goa. Today, Ignatius deeply feel proud of Joywin's success as he has scripted his mark for having the largest number of Konkani VCD and Konkani telefilms photographed, filmed and edited single handedly. A rare achievement, indeed, at a very young age! Joywin has some pleasant creative films to his name and credit. Among these include “Chintt Munxea Vogot Astanam”, “Chintnam Nuin Sopnam”, “ Ek Full Don Kannte”, etc.

The latest released film “Friends” in which the beautifully conceptualized romance between youngsters is well presented. 'It's happening for the first time in Konkani films', Ignatius prouldy states. Termed as a youthful joyride, the entertaining film is written, directed, photographed and edited by Joywin. Yet another new film titled “Family” is also slated for release soon. It's a film about relationships.

Coming back to "DOLLA" his cherished subject, Ignatius gives a little insight cheefully, "I intended to create a film long back, but due to reasons beyond my control and other commitments, the idea and script were set aside untouched. Now after an impatient wait of over 5 years, finally I have ventured out for this film. The trailor of this film is already out on a few Konkani Video CDs and also on youtube, goa-world.com and goamag.net web portals.
Watch it NOW on GoaMag.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWHOGW2RSIY

Now at the post-production stages, the 29 year old Ignatius feels great that his dream film has come true! It's been a truly a blissful experience to see my work on screen! “My wife Joyce has been my genuine support throughout the making of "DOLLA". She was instrumental in re-writing/modifying the script as the film progressed and accompanied me on the shoot locations. She did the part of an Assistant Director with a genuine eye for details. Without her love and support I couldn’t have brightened up my film", he candidly acknowledges. "My special thanks to all the cast who have tirelessly put in their best performances so also the technicians and support crew".

"The film has turned out in excellent form and to my liking. I have treated each and every element of the movie accurately keeping in mind the audience in and around the Konkan region. I have attempted to craft something different in the genre of Konkani films."

The film "DOLLA" features Sheryl Gomes, Sylvester Vaz, Irene Vaz, Marina D’Souza, Riana Azavedo, Simon Dias, and a host of other actors including Ignatius and Joyce in a small cameo appearance.

The production and marketing will be handled by "Home Video Productions". The other related aspects of the film are set for final touches. "I plan to release this movie on big screen soon. A few more shoots and that's all is awaited..... I am positive the Konkani audiences will like it".

As Ignatius confidently puts it, "DOLLA" is surely gonna be an all out entertainer and a collector's item for Konkani film enthusiasts.

The producer-director can be contacted via Email: ignatius_kuwait@yahoo.comThis e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , ifilmstudios@yahoo.comThis e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , or Tel/Mob: (+965) 99208421.

Further details about the cast, music and above all, the novel approach in production, direction and storyline is all that the Konkani film lovers await for to watch.

- Goa-World.Com Team joins all Konkani lovers and wishes Ignatius D. Fernandes and all associated with the film production all the very best.

"DOLLA" Poster was first released to goa-world.com team by the producer-director. Like they say in a PEPSI commercial, hea
dil'l mang'ge more.. ha, ha!

Gaspar Almeida
Associate, www.goa-world.com

Read on.....

There's nothing spiritual, the way Hollywood makes
movies today. The world is very evil today. Movies
about beloved religious figures provoke strong
reactions - from reverence to revulsion. For some,
they are vivid illustrations of their faith; for
others they are corny "sandal-operas."

Going around the internet resources available, I found
that, this season, three movies have caught the
attention of Protestants, Catholics and Jews, and
opinion is equally diverse. Supporters see them as a
golden opportunity for evangelism, while critics
charge they are demeaning to other faiths.

"Luther," a biopic about the rebellious Catholic
priest who sparked the Protestant Reformation, stars
Joseph Fiennes, the "Shakespeare in Love" heartthrob.
"The Gospel of John," a word-for-word dramatization of
the fourth book of the New Testament, features a cast
drawn from England's Royal Shakespeare Company. "The
Passion of Christ," Mel Gibson's drama of Jesus' last
12 hours, draws on a variety of sources.

"Luther" and "The Gospel of John" are now playing in
select cities in the US. The Passion of Christ was
released on Feb. 25, 2004, Ash Wednesday.

We've had a historic recognition of the Christian
market, which has not really been considered as a
group since the 1940s and 1950s," says Ted Baehr, of
MovieGuide, which rates commercial films for morality
and spirituality.

The difference in these films from other films about
Christ is that they are being made from the
perspective of believers, by believers. This makes a
huge difference in how they will be received by
unbelievers, because those of us who have faith in
Christ believe that the power of our faith is in the
word of God.

This season's religious movies also have generated
controversy. And bad publicity is a concern for the
religious community, experts say, because if the films
don't do well at the box office, it's unlikely that
there will be many more big-budget, big-screen,
commercial efforts anytime soon.

But the greatest furor so far involves Mel Gibson's
"The Passion of Christ," which has drawn early
criticism from Jewish groups and others concerned
about its telling of the story of the hours preceding
the Crucifixion. They say the film revives the image
of Jews as "Christ-killers." Gibson's conservative
Catholic religious views, and those of his father,
have attracted coverage.

To counteract some of the negative buzz, Gibson has
been screening the film around the US. Those attending
the screenings have been required to sign a
confidentiality agreement.

It takes you on an emotional roller coaster, like any
sermon or work of art does. Because of the reasonable
artistic liberties Gibson was able to take with
Scripture, he was able to include some Hollywood-style
emotional elements, while still remaining true to the
reality of what Christ went through.

Although the Gibson film has attracted the most
attention, "The Gospel of John" has been troubling to
some. Producers say it's a word-for-word re-creation
of the Gospel of John. If viewers have a problem with
the film, they say, their problem is with the
Scripture.

If it's not word-for-word, I don't want to see it. I
don't like what Hollywood puts out. They add too much
of their own beliefs, and they take away from the
word. When I find someone who can make a movie that is
the truth of the word of God, then I will go out of my
way to see it, a devout Catholic says.

In the meantime, the parishioners in 'select' Churches
in Goa enjoy the film, free of charge, minus some
stress on their eye-balls due to poor quality of the
DVDs. This is the first time an inaugural release of a KONKANI publication takes place in Kuwait. The occasion was beautifully orchestrated by KGTS committee members and the ribbon-cutting ceremony was done at the hands of Rev. Fr. Melywn D'Cunha, vicar of the Holy Cathedral Church, Kuwait City on 17/4/2007.

KGTS President, Katty de Navelim, presented a shawl and a Memento to the author. At the commencement, a prayer recital and a minute's silence was observed in the fond rememberance of late Shri Ulhas Buyao. During the ceremony an exhibition of Konkani books, magazines, novels and periodicals was inaugurated by Elvira D'Souza. Incidentally, Brazinho Soares was also honoured on the same day at the Kala Academy Goa together with several senior Goan Tiatr Artistes. The event has been compered by KGTS General Secretary, Dominic Araujo.

A brief about Brazinho Soares:
Brazinho Soares hails from Santa Cruz and hence the alias Kalapurkar gets attached and recognized synonimously. Born 1938, his first Konkani poem titled "Doriachem Ojeap" was published on 9/2/1958 in 'Aitarachem Vachop' Konkani newspaper. After this, there was no turning back, as Brazinho Soares' love for Konkani writings flowed from his pen and it is interesting to note that not a single newspaper, magazine, weekly is left without his contribution being published. A man of few words, he has the unique record of collecting Konkani publications, Tiatr reviews, leaflets (handbills), which he did as a hobby in his youth, which continues todate. Brazinho Soares has often loaned his entire collections to Kala Academy (Goa) whenever are exhibitions and seminars held for Konkani promoting organizations and has received appreciation from several dignitaries including Goa's Chief Ministers, Kala Academy heads/chairperson, Senior Tiatrists as well as Editors of Konkani publications and magazines.
Brazinho Soares has also participated in several tiatr competitions and has been honoured by various Konkani and Cultural Organizations, both in Goa as well as overseas. He is the receipient of Goa Government Awards, Ave Maria Furtado Award (Qatar), Santa Cruz Social Welfare Association, Kala Academy, etc. Brazinho's creative writings and poems have been published in Gulab, Vauraddeancho Ixtt, A Vanguarda, Ave Maria, Porjecho Adar, Goan Express, Vauraddi, Cine Times, The Goa Mail, Udentechem Noketr, Goencho Sad, Divtti, Sot, Uzvadd, Loksad, Goykar, Novem Goem, Goencho Avaz, Goenchem Ful, Konkan Mail, Arso, Goencho Porzoll, O'Heraldo, Goan Sports Weekly, Dor Mhoineachi Rotti, Konknni, Arso, Goencho Fuddari, and other periodicals.
Brazinho Soares has also been managing editor of Konkani periodicals and magazines such as Karnaval, Goencho Gulab, Hea Sonvsarant, Konknni Noketrancho Uzvadd, etc. A good tiatr writer and director, he has presented 'Mogacho Xevott Simiterint and 'Mogachi Doulot' tiatrs which were well appreciated by the audience. He has also presented two Lenten-based plays 'Ho to Monis' and 'Sorvonddar Mell'lo' which were based on Jesus Christ's passion and his teachings. Earlier he has published two books with his collection of 'poems'.

"KONKNNI OPARINCHO JHELO" is a collectors' item and a treasure trove.
KGTS has supported the venture in publishing it. The publication will be made available to all KONKNNI lovers in Goa and worldwide from today (22nd April). A Gemini, born on 20 June 1965, is 42Y/25D hails from St. Agostinho Vaddo, Santa Cruz–Ilhas, Tiswadi, Goa, one of seven siblings of Late Joao Francisco de Araujo and Annalia Inacia Araujo (Anul). Araujo’s primary education was at Government School and in 1982 he passed SSCE from New English High School, Santa Cruz.

After passing SSCE examination he was misguided by his relatives. “Xinkkon Konn Voir Sorla? Passport Kor ani Kuveit Voch!" (Who has benefitted from education, get your passport and go to Kuwait). "It was at that time when multi-coloured shorts, t-shirts and jean pants were in demand", he smiles mischievously. "Not only that the temptation was so, whoever comes from Gulf was called "Kuveitkar"". Araujo’s father worked for the Public Works Department PWD Div IV - Panjim for nineteen years up to 1977, and later worked in Bahrain until 1992.

Araujo narrowly missed the admission for Goa Polytechnic College at Farmagudi, otherwise he could be top notch! He laments, "I was not favoured by lady luck. That’s how I landed in Industrial Training Institute (ITI) at Atinho Panjim, where he spent two years for a trade certificate". There was less training, not-up-to-the-mark facilities and more leisure at the ITI. Araujo took good advantage of this and along with his colleague Bonifacio Dias from Penha de Franca (Britona) got themselves involved in the persuit of Konkani articles and news clippings. Soon, Araujo's leadership qualities sprung open and formed "Jolly Boys of St. Agostinho" club, and in the very first year organized record four football tournaments. 72 teams competed in a single tournament and was the biggest success of his leadership, that’s happened in mid eighties at Green Field Football Ground in Santa Cruz - the facility offered courtesy Dr. Alvaro Pinto.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHz_xSvQ530Usw8fLcv55j1tQXnKCatGtHkWesd7tKqrZqXbRqWm2zw-UBagr_pHzjQFBIZ1fRjAynZQE_BW-VTFFH5K1KxZojdlgHOMYJx_9e7jDTixHFEzDU0qY7DaVvu59Mc8oq4ItB/s320/DSC_0232.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5157820580514701890" />

As a tiatrist Araujo has something different that any other tiatrist! Every second tiatrist made wonders at a tender age of 7, 8 or 10, 11 on stage! Araujo clocked it in little less time at the age of six. He recalled: “Tiatrs were staged using oil lamps (Petromas) when there was no power in villages”. “Araujo witnessed tiatr in the absent of either oil lamps or power lights”!!! Yes it’s true, it was in early seventies during the Indo-Pakistan war, he was visiting his Banda-Mai (great maternal mother from St. Cruz village of Bandar linking to Teleigao). He recalls on his way not far from his house at Marod/Maddir the traditional annual tiatr for the feast of St. Agostinho scheduled for 4 p.m. to escape black out during the night. Araujo discovered the art in broad daylight! He returned home without visiting his Banda-Mai, and to prove himself, enacted the same tiatr performance he witnessed, his maiden off stage acting in sheer pursuit of being a tiatrist and managed to convince his parents. But it was not easy, it took him another nine years to prove his hidden talents when he was offered to enact the role of a honest cop in the school play. His maternal mother, who witnessed his love for Konkani, cheered him. Araujo feels proud and claims "It’s his Banda-Mai, who opened him the path of acting". Araujo’s success owed to his Konkani subject teacher Shri. Bharat Nayak, hailing from Goa-Velha - a theatre personality and writer/director/actor of numerous Konkani plays and dramas. “Khaxi Pondak” is one of Bharat Nayak's best suspense plays staged for his school concert, he recalls.

As far as acting is concerned Araujo believes he's rusted steel, but will not throw away for cheap price. He is very innovative and creativity runs in his viens. In 1986 under the banner of Jolly Boys of St. Agostinho, he staged his maiden tiatr "MHOZO BHAV" without acting in any tiatr even at village level. Araujo later presented “MHOZO BHAV” at the Kala Academy Tiatr Competition which was performed on the very first day of competition at Kala Academy Open Air Hall with his upcoming budding teenagers.

Araujo’s prowess as writer/director/actor was recognized by noted local tiatrist Peter Barbose (Father of Carmin/Elvis, who was recently awarded KALA GAURAV AWARD by Chief Minister of Goa, Digamber Kamat for his meritorious service in the field of tiatr, he has written more than 50 tiatrs), Brazinho Soares Kalapurkar (writer/collector of Konkani literature) and Anthony Fernandes (Bollu Anton). It was Anthony Fernandes who gave Araujo the opportunity to perform in the title roles in his tiatrs namely, "DUDDVANCHE AXECHO" and "NIDDUKAI". Araujo’s singing capacity is equally the same as his acting! He has composed a few songs. Araujo formed his own trio with his close friends Anthony Fernandes and Socorro Bocarro. A song composed to praise the only Konkani monthly magazine "GULAB" was well applauded by audience. Araujo’s colleague Anthony fired one political solo on Goan MLA’s “AMDAR AMCHE AMKAM SANNAM KHAVOITA, ELISANVAM VELLAR FUGHE FULLOITA” sung for one of his tiatrs. As was the censorship trend then, Araujo was summoned for enquiry by then Deputy Sarpanch, Late Dr. Antonio Gonsalves on the instructions of then Santa Cruz MLA Michael Fernandes. An explanation was requested and in his own immitable way, he smiled at Dr. Gonsalves and presented him some newspaper clippings! Araujo acted with Peter Barbosa in his tiatr "CUSTOM OFFICER" staged near Sao Gonsalo Chapel, Cujira on 27th November 1986.

In 1987 Araujo was tempted by a lucrative job in Saudi Arabia when it was a peak time for tiatr and one act plays competitions in Goa. For seven years he could not think of tiatrs or anything related, as he felt that he has landed in an alien land where he could not even speak a single word in Konkani! He had subscribed to GULAB magazine, but that was also cut short due to non receipt of renewal notice in time. Following vacation time Araujo visited the GULAB office in Panjim to express his sadness and feelings to the founder/editor, Late Fr. Freddy J. Da Costa concluding: “TUZO GULAB VACHTOLE ZAITE ASSA, PUN VIKTO GHETOLE KONN NAM ”. In 1994 Araujo returned for good to Goa. He tried to carry forward on Konkani stage, but did not find suitable incentives. In 1995, just before he landed in Kuwait he had a last laugh in Cyril Almeida’ tiatr on stage in Goa!!

In June 1995 Araujo took a trade job in Ahmadi - the place well known as the cradle and birthplace of Konkani tiatr in Kuwait . From 1995 to 2001 it was a long journey - a height of patience when very few tiatrist were seen and performed tiatrs. He confesses "It appeared there were no tiatrists in Kuwait even after the big guns like Kuwait Trio of Cajetan-Marcus-Xavier, Mendes Bros: Felix-Derick-Xavier, H.Britton, etc. and no opportunity to display your talents". It was only when United Club of Utorda-Kuwait announced their first one act Konkani play competition when he met Alex de Consua. Alex offloaded his role just a week before the competition to give Araujo his first stage appearance in Kuwait". The play was written and directed by Estevan Rodrigues from Mandur, Ilhas. Later, Araujo climbed on new pedestal when he was invited as guest artiste for SONGIT SANZ at Kuwait City in Fakher Eldeen Palace in October 2001 organized by Konkani Heritage Kuwait. Araujo soon licked well within the tiatrists’ faternity. A man of action and grace, he continued his march towards his goal and formed "KALA MOGUI – KUWAIT (KMK)" and organized First Konkani Singing Competition and staged a well acclaimed short Konkani play “MAFI MAGTAM” on 28th December 2002. "Araujo - a man of strong voice is very selective, a little sensitive and the best critic"! Under the banner and leadership of Kala Mogui – Kuwait , he has shown keen interest and participated in various events held in Kuwait . On 13th April 2007, “KMK”staged Anil Olga’s MUNIS TUM the 75th Silver Jubilee show with a colorful celebratory ceremony. Araujo took centre stage as the compere of the show, later in a very first scene he was acting too. He has no hesitation to shoulder any responsibilities on and off stage! On the Soor football grounds you will see him distributing flyers, assisting to promote Konkani, helping tiatrists to sell Konkani materials like CD’s, VCD’s, Konkani publications, etc.

Araujo distances himself from controversial elements and avoids friction. He cannot bear the thought of any Goan put down by unsocial elements within the community. He says: Everything he does, in the interest of Konkani, in his point of view, tiatrists are not for Konkani, they deserve credit as the ambassadors without knowing the alphabets of Konkani. Araujo believes he is hundred times far than tiatrists, even though his admirer appreciates his dedication for Konkani and tiatr.

Araujo the victim of love & life follows pelican crossing, it’s really difficult for one man to handle all alone, he was deserted by unwanted incident. Today he is a proud father and a loving husband, his two years and four months old daughter DJ STACY and his wife MARIA has everything they deserve. Araujo is the professional Auto-CAD Design Draftsman works for Arabian Construction Company - one of Kuwait Fire Department’s Approved Grade “A” Fire Fighting Contractors. Today if Araujo is the perfect planner from oil field to commercial projects for mechanical/electrical works is only from learn-while-you-earn policy.

Araujo is the President of Kala Mogui – Kuwait (KMK) the organization created by him to promote art and culture. He is the General Secretary of Kuwait-Goa Tiatristanchi Sonvstha (KGTS), and also the elected member of Goan Welfare Society (GWS) managing committee (2007-08).

Araujo is very grateful to T-Bush for inviting him on the sets of the first Konkani e-cinema BLACK NHESOP ATANCHEM FASHION. Araujo, with his focussing eyes, enlightens " The first Konkani e-cinema is ready to behold - there won’t be any slip either from the shoulder nor from the waist which will undress to young or old, all the angles are well captured by T-Bush the man behind the lens too". For Araujo, T-Bush is the hero; the master of art, besides direction & editing T-Bush has written the script too. Araujo strongly believes and proudly mentions: "T-Bush is the man who can literally bring down the stars on earth. The quality of his art will prove millions of Konkani speaking people around the globe. T-Bush’s generosity is unbeatable. Why? During the formation of Kala Mogui, Araujo was looking for some one to design the logo for his organization. He was introduced to T-Bush by Nicholas Rodrigues (United Club of Utorda). No doubt his art work is marvelous, the greatness of T-Bush is his "smile n services". It’s beyond your expectation!

Araujo stars as one of the guest artistes, and wishes all the best for the co-artistes, the technicians, the musicians, the crew, the publicity coordinators, and above all the director T-Bush. The grand premier is schedule for 10 August 2007, at Mashra Al-Hawally A/C Auditorium in the State of Kuwait.

A couple of weeks to go and to coincide with this grand occasion Araujo takes the opportunity, on behalf of T-Bush Films International and the cast, to thank all Kuwaiti Ministry Officials, for the cooperation and support for the first Konkani e-cinema and the first Indian film entirely shoot in the State of Kuwait.

Action!..… Dialogue! … Cut!.… "BLACK" is ready to go on SCREEN!

Gaspar Almeida
www.goa-world.com

http://www.youtube.com/uly334
"DOMNIC's GOA" To get your copy email cecilpinto@gmail.com
CREATING HISTORY! GWS has strongly stood to the challenges and have strived for the betterment of the Goan community. And the saga of success continuous unabated. 1999 saw GWS celebrated with style the 5th Goa Day event - a much cherished event for the Goan community in Kuwait to display unity among Goans. It was attended by over 2000 during the day long programme comprising of Goan cultural, food, games of skill, educational, and talent contests. The Goa Day '99 had the participation of all Goan clubs in Kuwait and this was specially witnessed at the lighting of the traditional lamp for the opening ceremony, serenaded by the visiting Goan troupe, Augustinho da Cruz and his troupe, which was flown direct from Goa - courtesy of Indian Airlines. GWS participation in the social, cultural and economic programmes and forums organized by the Embassy of India, Indian Arts Circle (of which GWS is a member), the Association of Indian Professionals (AIP), the visiting Indian delegations, and others further enhances our commitment of solidarity among the Indian expatriates in Kuwait. On the call by H.E. The Ambassador of India, Rs. 98,000/- were raised towards the Indian Army Welfare Fund for the Kargil cause in the name of the Goan community - thanks to the individuals and the clubs/associations for their contribution. GWS actively participated in the Diwalli Programme in November '98 organized by the Embassy of India at the IAC Auditorium, and the Republic Day celeberations at the Indian Embassy. The GWS X'mas Tree '98 function was a grand success. GWS was invited by H.E. the Ambassador of India to Kuwait for a Christmas Party hosted for prominent Indians. We
contributed towards the Christmas illumination of the Embassy building and the Auditorium repairs and renovation works . A warm welcome was accorded to Fr. Hilary Fernandes of Pilar Society by GWS and helped him to raise funds for charity. He was honoured and presented with a Memento. GWS offered full support and cooperation for the canonization process of Vernerable Fr. Agnel D'Souza. GWS makes it a point to look homeward, and spare a thought for those needy and less fortunate bretherns who are unfortunately rendered homeless. Over the past year, we have, in our small way, rendered assistance to: Home for the Aged (Albergue)-Loutolim, Associacoa Pao de Sto. Antonio-Curtorim, Inmates of Deao's Home-Quepem, Old Age Home-Quepem (M.C. Sisters), Patrocial Chapel-Benaulim, Asylum of Margao
(Provedoria), Navajyothi Rehabilitation Centre-Nuvem, Clergy Home (Hospicio do Clero)-Margao, Missionaries of Charity (Asilo)-Panaji, Fr. Agnel Trust, among others. GWS offered full support to Don Bosco Mission to establish an unique institute in Kuwait. In times of need, GWS has been always on the forefront, in the interest of the Goans. The matter for compensation for the accident victim case in Kuwait, Mrs. Maria Ninette Fernandes of Nuvem, Verna, Salcette, was vigorously followed-up since December '96, with the assistance and cooperation of the Indian Embassy , and GWS is pleased to inform that it has been favourably settled by the Courts of Kuwait and a sum of KD. 16000/- was granted. GWS donated Rs. 10,000/- towards Mrs. Anita Noronha's kidney transplant operation and we are pleased to inform that the operation has been a success. Time and again, GWS has been committed itself to look into the grieviences of the Goan destitues. GWS has very recently assisted in the repatriation of two Goan destitute housemaids, Ms. Martha Barretto hailing from Canacona and Ms. Simona Alemos hailing from Ilha de Rachol, Salcette, through the good offices of the Indian Embassy. Both were flown by Indian Airlines direct to Goa and airfares borne soley by GWS. We have expressed our interest to the Indian Mission looking after the interest of the runaway Indian maids, within our means, to fly out the six Goan maids - four Christians, one Hindu and one
Muslim - presently at the Safe House, and re-unite them with them family, hopefully, before the X'mas Day! At the request of the Indian Embassy, GWS rendered help to a Goan maid to transport her left baggage on KWI/GOI flight. With the help of our benefactor, Mr. Tony Figuerado, it was handed over to her in Goa. The top Goan artiste, Lorna, who visited Kuwait for a Konkani drama was honoured by GWS and presented with a Memento. It has been a proud privilege to make a headway in the local sports activities of the expatriate Indians. GWS responded to the call of Kuwait Indian Football Federation (KIFF) to sponsor the J.P. D'Mello Memorial Rolling Trophy (KIFF Super League) in recognition of his services towards the promotion of football in India and Kuwait. GWS has also sponsored the "Kuwaitkar Team" who will participate with other Gulf, North America and African Football Team for the first ever Goan Soccer 2000 World Cup Tournament to be held between 9th - 22nd January 2000, conducted under the auspices of Goa Football Association (GFA) in Goa. The top ranking Goan students at the 1998-99 Goa Board's Secondary School Certificate Examinations (SSCE) were honoured at a recently held Lions Club function in Curtorim. A sum of Rs. 5000/- each to the top Goan girl, Neelam R. Prabhugoanker of M&N English High School - Margao and to the top Goan boy Vankatesk Kolvalker of Mustifund High School - Panaji were handed over by the chief guest, Mr. Francisco Sardinha, Hon. Minister of Health in the presence of GWS Treasurer, Mr. Joaquim Sardinha. The annual scholarship awards are sponsored by Mr. & Mrs. Sam Alphonso, patron member of GWS. The 1999
annual GWS academic scholarship awards for students studying in Kuwait's Indian Schools affiliated to the CBSE Board, New Delhi has been extended to Std. IXth, Xth, XIth and XIIth. The receipients of the GWS Scholarship awards for 1999 are: Miss Christabelle Pinto (Std. IX), and Miss Myra Antao (Std. IX), Miss Chantelle Marise Miranda (Std. X), Master Noel Micheal D'Souza (Std. Our hearty congratulations to these young Goans who make us feel proud. GWS thank in a very special way, Mr. & Mrs. Sam Alphonso for their kind sponsorship of these academic awards. Over the past years, GWS has taken special interest in seeking jobs for Goans by recommending suitable candidates to the employers. Service benefits for those Goans not recalled and which was at stake has also been looked into. The war compensation benefits were also followed. The May Queen '99 Ball was held at the Messilah Beach Hotel-Habiba Ballroom on 6th May 1999 and hailed as a success. Ms. Analy Furtado was crowned the May Queen. Handsome prizes, air-tickets and
electronic goods, prize coupons, etc. were donated by Kuwait's top business houses and well wishers in Kuwait. The Educational Seminar, organized by GWS, at the Carlton Hotel in April '99 saw eminent and illustrious educationists, doctors and high profile professionals from IT, Airlines, Tourism, Advertising, and Administrative cadres in Kuwait conveyed the indepth vocational guidance to the students of the Indian schools. A large number of students, parents, school administrators and attended and H.E. The Ambassador inaugurated the seminar. Plans are in the offing to establish and operate a medical facility in Goa. The idea has been mooted in coordination with the Goan football clubs in Kuwait and prominent Goans in the Gulf region. Towards this end, efforts are being made to implement this much cherished dream through the cooperation of Goan doctors, medical technologists, nurses and the medical faculty in Kuwait with close liaison with medical professions and the concerned authorities in Goa. GWS looks forward to make this dream a reality with the cooperation of all. GWS Membership have recorded a upsurge in the last two years and continues in the trend currently at the same pace. Issues of vital interest to the Goan community in Kuwait and back home have been taken at official levels with the Governor of Goa, the Chief Minister, honourable members of Goa's Legislative Assembly, the Speaker of Goa, and educational/social institutions to redress the genuine grieviences. The issue of reservations of seats for NRI Goan students in medical and professional colleges in Goa has been continuously been looked into. A joint delegation comprising of GWS and the Presidents of Goan clubs/associations recently met with the Indian Airlines management in Kuwait and we are pleased to announce the commencement of the Kuwait-Goa direct flight in November '99. We are also pleased to announce a special additional direct flight by Indian Airlines on Wednesday 22nd December 1999 at 0130 hours. Issues of mutual interest concerning ticket reservations, cargo, baggage allowances and inflight services were raised and deleberated. Incidents like these had
never happened in the past 52 years of independence,
in such an organised manner.

Persecution is not new to Christianity and the
Christians have well been motivated by their master to
maintain their integrity amidst adversity. Posterity
and international community will judge the working of
democracy in India by the way the minorities are being
treated here.

Every religion preaches the message of love and anyone
who is truly religious will not stoop to such cowardly
criminal attacks. It is high time the Centre acted
positively and created a sense of security amongst the
Christians. We, as a nation, should rise to the
occasion and condemn such acts of violence no matter
against whom they are committed.

It is not known why in a country which boasts of
tolerance, such acts of terrorism are unleashed. With the last two mega musical super hit shows in
Kuwait, they did it again with the grand success of "OSTAD TIATRIST" - a
tribute to Konkani Tiatr and Tiatrist, which was a sellout. Staged at the
Hawalli A/C auditorium on 24th February 2006, this much awaited annual event
saw the cream of the Konkani lovers among the audience. At the commencement,
one minute silence was observed in respect of the late Amir, Sheikh Jaber Al
Ahmed Al Jaber Al Sabah. Paying their respect to this great leader of Kuwait,
the audience with the organizers observed a minute silence. KGTS started the
show by playing Kuwait's National Anthem. This was followed by a chit-chat
with a flow of yesteryears Tiatrists' songs as well as depiction. Legendary
star Late Anthony Mendes shot to fame with his solo song "Taxi Driver" decades
ago, and this time his sons, the Mendes Brothers, Felix-Xavier-Derrick
performed it as a Trio. Remembering their father's contribution, Felix Mendes
appreciated and thanked the KGTS members for inviting them to perform for
their grand musical show. Felix also extended their well wishes and pledged
support to new upcoming stars. Apart from the the Kuwait-based stars who
performed, a galaxy of artistes from Bombay and Goa were flown specially for
the 3rd Grand Musical show in Kuwait. Joe Rose, Comedian Augustino Temudo and
Comedian Domnic Coelho, S.Lemos, Francis de Tuem and Trio Kings of Goa:
Joaquim-Junior Rod-Anthony dazzled the audience in their spell binding musical
journey of the golden era of Tiatr. The comedy skits interspeared between the
songs. Songs from Francis de Tuem on Goa's mining industry was well applauded
by the audience so was the Trio Kings songs on the political scenario in Goa.
Trio kings are hardcore composers with political and social topics. They are
very famous for their bold lyrics and widely expose the flaws of the Goa
government through their songs. Their trios "Dr. Verenkar", " M.Boyer"
and "Parrikar" were well applauded. Comedian Domnic and Comedian Agostinho's
performance kept the audience laughing till the very end.

The appearances of the majority of the KGTS members including Manuel de Santa
Cruz, Tony Carr, Clara, Domingos Araujo, Zorro, among others, in different
song sequences and scenarios was well choreographed with appropriate light
effects and music by a team of youngsters led by well-known musicians Maestro
Succorro de Melo.

The main attraction of the show was the leaflets (popularly known as
Handbills) of yesteryears Tiatrs that were on display on the left side of the
stage, and the right side of the stage was occupied by the musicians. This
unique collection dating back to 1950's was provided by Brazinho Soares of
Santa Cruz (Goa) to KGTS. The stage set-up suited for the musical show, the
decor as well as light effects added charm. The opening song by KGTS President
Francis de Verna, KGTS members Junifer Rodrigues, Donald Colaco and Cajetan de
Sanvordem highlighted the significance of the title of the musical "Ostad
Tiatrist".

Heartthrob of Konkani stage Jose Rod in his song "AMIG" paid rich tributes
to "Bab Peter". Jose Rod was felicitated at the hands of Xavier Mendes for his
tremendous contribution. With tears of joy, a surprised Jose Rod thanked all
his fellow KGTS colleagues and fellow Tiatr lovers for honour bestowed. The
compere announced that this was a well guarded secret by the KGTS until the
event unfolded. Mario de Majorda was at his best with his hilarious laughing
pills along with Comedian Nelson. "Palkacho Divo" a tribute song to one of the
senior artistes - Anthony (of Trio Kings fame) by the newly formed trio Katty
de Navelim-Simon Gonsalves-Joseph Rodrigues was well composed sung. At this
junction, Anthony was escorted on the stage and he congratulated the composer
and singers. Such was his liking of the song that Anthony will have it added
in his Konkani VCD which will be shortly released in fond rememberance of his
Trio singers – Late Conception and Late Nelson.

KGTS which was formed in 2003 and has organized Musical Show in Kuwait for the
last 3 years including this year, the proceeds collected is given to Goan
Dramatists on Konkani Stage who are often old and forgotten. This is one
generous way of telling the senior and retired Dramatists that KGTS together
with Konkani Tiatr lovers in Kuwait cares for them and that their contribution
is not forgotten by the new generation. Gracy Morais "Cheddum", Joe
Rose "Bubli Bubli", "Goenchim Antique Ghoram" and "Jaisi Jaisi", Anthony
Carr "Goa", Zorro "Kazar Zatam", Donald Colaco "Upkar", S.Lemos "Rakhno
Bhurgo" and "Kiddo ani Mathi", Junior Rod "Kid Boxer", Francis de Tuem "Young
Menezes", "Salleli Satari" and "Christanvachim Devmondiram", Katty de
Navelim "Ushar Raza" kept the audience spellbound. A song by Francis de Verna-
Gracy Morais-Cajetan de Sanvordem titled "KGTS" gave a glimpse of the events
from its formation and its three years of achivements for the benefit of the
tiatrists. The moral of the song was a strong message for the detractors who
try to put up hurdles to destroy the tiatrists' faternity's unity and
togetherness. The short play by Gracy and Group was captivating. The roles
played by Simon Gonsalves, Joseph Rodrigues, Gracy Morais, Clara and Laurie
Miranda were perfectly enacted. The show was compered by Cajetan de Sanvordem.
A game of quick five housie was conducted as well as the draw for the annual
KGTS raffle.

Working together for the Tiatrist Fraternity and giving some good performance
on stage is what KGTS stands for. The audience expected beautiful meanful
songs and witty jokes in combination with theme stories. All praise to the
KGTS members for putting up such a lovely show and short skits that they
people enjoyed. KGTS always comes with some unique performances, and this was
evident at the show when the stars of yesteryears were introduced with their
memorable songs sung by KGTS members non-stop. As the title of the musical
show signified, Konkani stage artistes, singers and musicians are
indeed 'Great Artistes' (Ostad Tiatrists) who have kept the flag of the
Konkani language high and have brought in significant awareness on the good
and bad of the Goan lifestyle and unique cultural heritage. The five
beneficiaries for the annual KGTS awards, namely: Ms. Ophelia, Remmie Colaco,
Patrick de Verna, Ms. Anita and Ms. Antonette Mendes were announced. Since
2002, Konkani stage lovers have been able to bring joy and smiles through the
proceeds collected through presentations and efforts of KGTS to seniormost and
retired Konkani stage artistes of the yesteryears, namely: Padmashri Award
winner M.Boyer, Philomena Braz, Betty Ferns, Albert Rose, Patrick Dourado,
Vitorino Periera, (Late) Mary Vaz, Prem Kumar, Paul Romy,(Late) Rom Tony, Late
Rosario Rodrigues, and John Nazareth. KGTS enjoys a large influence and
patronage of the Konkani lovers.

- Report by William Fernandes & Gaspar Almeida
- Photos by Rewon Gomes, professional photographer
(courtesy: KGTS)

Article and photos at:

http://www.goanet.org/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=341Goa-World.COMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02905034224348483211noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2023348135057904193.post-45880005262687418932007-12-17T02:30:00.000-08:002007-12-18T00:15:05.410-08:00CHUKLELIM PANVLAM<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgtYs3F9ptupxDyI9aEDZ8KD4Ty2EpHtN3fg85woUj-ua8Aq8urBUGYslJFlF5Jvp2NhPlaF2BdNP3jJF4LhCD2_toMyyf2Cmt7ySea52K9QVVTFJViQxlQmqsflea4aVlgJoJFPAOAyHk/s200/stationlogo.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5145223471500294162" />
CHUKLELIM PANVLAM – declared A Super Hit Show by the
Audience

24th June 2005 witnessed a new era on the Konkani
Stage in Kuwait. Under the auspices of Ferns Brothers
Production, Mario de Majorda staged his third Konkani
Drama, a suspense thriller titled "CHUKLELIM PANVLAM"
(Strayed Footsteps) at the Hawally A/C Auditorium to a
capacity crowd. The show, a heart-stopper was
declared a Super Hit by the crowd during the interval
itself. It's truly unbelievable, as the reaction from
the huge crowd was tremendous. This Tiatr (drama)
lifted the Konkani stage to a new height with his
unique presentation. The show got underway with a
video projection depicting a funeral, followed by the
titling thus introducing each artists – the
presentation was truly wonderful. There was no
turning back as each item whether a song, play, comedy
was a treat to watch. Kudos to Mario de Majorda for a
marvelous script. The suspense of the play got more
intriguing with each scene which left the large
audience glued to their seats. Each artistes had
taken great pains in performing their part to the best
of their ability. To begin with Cajetan de Sanvordem
as the Grand-father made his presence felt with his
superb acting. Adrian Gomes as the son was excellent.
Gracy Morais' role of a wicked daughter-in-law was
enacted with much gusto which proved the Director's
trust in her acting prowess. Teen Artist Master
Jonathan was simply too good in his acting and while
his sad role brought tears to the eyes of many, his
witty dialogues were applauded with resounding claps.
Apparently Mario de Majorda must have put lot of hard
work in grooming Jonathan for this role as the
results were quite rewarding. Donald Colaco, proved
yet again why he is nick-named the Nana Patekar of the
Konkani Stage. His villain laced character was a
turning point of the play as Donald did full justice
to his tailor-made role. The handsome Ulhas Tari and
ravishing Jessica Gomes who were specially flown in
from Goa for the very first time proved with their
superb acting that they are thorough professionals;
thus leaving a lasting impression in the minds of the
Kuwait based Konkani lovers. Laurie Miranda, Joseph
Rodrigues and Clara Rodrigues were very impressive in
their cameo roles. The back-ground music for the play
& comedy was provided by the upcoming sensation Philip
Gracias who did a wonderful job on the organ. Music
for the play songs was masterminded by Maestro Socorro
DeMelo.The visiting professional comedians Agostinho
and Salvy along with Comedy Queen Querobina, and Rocky
had a point to prove – that they have great respect
for the Konkani lovers in Kuwait and will not take
them for granted with cheap antics. The tedious task
of firing with all barrels open in order to gain the
confidence of Konkani tiatr lovers was always at the
back of their mind. Thus they came out strong with a
superb blend of comedy to make the audience laugh
their hearts out. The comedy based on
Chor-Police-Advocate in a family triangle added a
feather in the hat of the director.

The opening Chorus rendered by Anthony Ferns, Master
Jonathan and Mario de Majorda with superb choreography
by Ms. Conchita and Troupe was simply breathtaking and
graceful. The music provided by professionals Socorro,
Shahu, Faustinho, Dennis and Agnelo was quite
memorable and kept the audience stunned, mesmerized
and lost of words. All the 12 songs churned out by
Jose Rod, Kuwait's Trio Kings Cajetan-Marcus-Mario,
Young Trio Jonathan-Clifford-Terence, Michael D'Silva,
Querobina Carvalho, Francis de Verna, Gracy Morais and
Ulhas Tari were undoubtedly the best. However a little
praise should go to Ulhas Tari who had the privilege
to render his first ever solo on the Konkani Stage.
T-Britton who made his first appearance in Kuwait with
this show will be remembered by the Kuwait Konkani
lovers for his repeat performance of his solo "Alice".
The final video projection depicting a hotel scene was
beautifully and professionally picturized on Gracy,
Donald and Clara. It was note worthy to mention that
till the final curtain was drawn the audiences were
still glued to their seats wanting for more to come,
as the suspense unfolded.
During the interval the Chief Guest, GWS PRO Wilson
Coelho praised Ferns Brothers for their hard work and
tremendous efforts in presenting a unique drama. Ulhas
Tari, Jessica Gomes, T-Britton, Comedian Salvy,
Comedian Agostinho were felicitated by Kuwait Goan
Association through their initiator Salvador Dias.
Qerobina Carvalho and Cajetan de Sanvordem were
felicitated by the Ferns Brothers for their
contribution to the Konkani stage. In fulfillment of
his dream to utilize God's given talent for the
benefit of the down-trodden, Mario de Majorda made it
public that the proceeds of the show in the sum of Rs.
1,05,000/- would be spent for the welfare of the HOME
FOR THE AGED facility in his home village, Majorda,
Salcette and Rs. 10,000/- generated by organizing the
game of HOUSIE played during the recess was
contributed towards two handicapped individuals in the
village of Curtorim, Salcette. Sound system for the
show provided by James Franco was superb and worth a
mention. So also the Stage and Light setting by
Leckinson. Light effects were handled by Menino de
Ribandar. The back-drop of a rich mansion was crafted
by Caetano Rodrigues. Audio Visuals were done by
Toni while T-Bush played a pivotal role with his
selfless contribution. Photography by Rewon Gomes.
With the huge Success of "Chuklelim Panvlam" Mario de
Majorda has created a name for himself not only as one
of the best Writer/Director/Actor/ Composer/Singer but
also as a kind hearted individual; and will be
remembered by the masses for a long long time. A large
number of distinguished Goan community leaders and
social workers were among the audience. Arrangements are being made to fly the mortal
remains to Goa.

Born in 1951 at Onsnimadem, Cuncolim, Salcette and was baptised "Cruz Sanny
Vaz", he is the eldest among 11 children. His family moved permanently to
reside in Quepem in 1952. He did his primary education at Guardian Angel
High School, Sanvordem and later as a boarder at St. Anthony's High School,
Monte-de-Guirim, and continued at Pope John XXIII High School and Holy Cross
Institute in Quepem.

Here's a brief of an interview with www.goa-world.com published on the
Gulf-Goans e-Newsletter:

His first steps on the stage was for an English play titled "Ali Baba and
His Forty Thieves" for the annual social gathering, and later in the play
"Man from Jericho". He enacted the role of a damsel in both presentations
at Monte de Guirim. He also participated in the school choir as well as in
cultural programmes. His favourite liking was to sing songs and doing
imitations/ mimicry. He composed his first song "Sounsarachea Adnixt" at
the age of 10, and he sang it repeatedly for almost a decade on several
occasions. Sanny studied Automoble Engineering at ITI, Formaguddi and
joined "Agencia Sequeira (Leyland Co.)" in 1975. In search of better
prospects, he travelled to Saudi Arabia where he worked until August 1998.
After a gap of three months, opportunity again knocked on his door, and he
landed in Kuwait and joined a Japanese Automobile firm, and continues to
reside since. It was in 2000, he once again took to the Konkani stage for
Laurent Pereira's drama and since have composed and sang his own songs and
also assisted his colleagues (be it prompting, direction or revising
scripts).

Sanny remembers his earliest performance in "Vepari Veniceacho" (Merchant of
Venice) - a Konkani play translated by Miss Amelia Gomes and directed by
Peter Dias where he played a comedy role. He acted in every drama that took
place in Quepem or in the surrounding villages for Konkani tiatrs. It was
at this junction he started his career with the professional directors like
Jess Fernandes, along with Hortencio Pereira, Salvador, Natty de Navelim,
Nora, Cajetan de Sanvordem, and C. D'Silva. This was the turning point for
Sanny when he was auditioned for singing at the All India Radio (AIR),
Panjim when he was recording for Jess Fernandes Konkani radio recorded
plays. For a brief stint in Bombay (Mumbai) in 1975, Sanny sang at
Banghwadi when he was introduced by his cousin (who played bass) to Paul
Romy who staged a musical show.

Before flying to Saudi Arabia, Sanny acted in his home village for Felix
Pereira's tiatr "Rogtak Rogot Visronam" and finally at Colva (1977) for
"Doganch Puru" written and directed by Nelson (Nelson-Anthony-Conception
fame). For the annual Kala Academy tiatr competitions, he was rewarded for
his dedication towards singing Konkani songs and have acted twice for Ceasar
D'Mello. Even while on vacation he participated in the Konkani singing
competitions in 1986 and won the award as the Best Singer for the eight
time.

A man of few words, he humbly states "I do not consider myself as an actor,
but can convincingly do small roles. I am good at singing and composing
solos". On and off, he is seen on the Konkani stage in Kuwait as part of a
duo or a trio songs combination. At last week's Konkani drama of Rosary
Ferns' "Bhurgim - Mai-Paichem Sukh" his song saluting the work of "Aya"
(Maid) received a thunderous applause, as well as for his acting as a
mentally challenged boy. His song "Kazar" in Rosary Ferns' "Raag" Konkani
Album has been well received. Sanny recalls that apart from tiatr he sang
for a Hindi orchestra (songs and medleys), as well as crooned for a dance
band "Young Challengers" for some time. He is thankful to Mr. & Mrs. Albano
Pinto for introducing him to writer-director Laurent Pereira, for whom he
expresses his gratitude for giving him a big boost.

Sanny can recollect with sharp precision events he had witnessed in his
younger days including the happenings during the pre and post liberation
years in his village during his schooling days. When time permits from his
hectic office routine, Sanny writes for the Gulf-Goans e-Newsletter under
the caption <Cross+Roads>, as well as other articles on Goanet and The Goan
Forum. He also acted in T-Bush's 1st
Konkani e-cinema 'BLACK'. Kuwait-based Konkani tiatrists and singers will
always remember Sanny de Quepem for his support for them before and during
the staging of their tiatrs/musical shows/dramas - be it prompting, script
re-writing or songs composition.

Goa-World.Com Team (Kuwait) joins his friends and colleagues at Mustafa
Karam Co. May his soul rest in peace.

_____________

Sanny de Quepem

Sanny de Quepem hails from Quepem and is a 8 times
Kala Academy's "Best Singer Award winner". Born in
1951 at Onsnimadem, Cuncolim, Salcette and was
baptised "Cruz Sanny Vaz", he is the eldest among 11
children. His family moved permanently to reside in
Quepem in 1952. He commenced his primary education at
Guardian Angel High School, Sanvordem and later as a
boarder at St. Anthony's High School, Monte-de-Guirim.
Later due to unavoidable circumstance, he continued at
Pope John XXIII High School and Holy Cross Institute
in Quepem.

His first steps on the stage was for an English play
titled "Ali Baba and His Forty Thieves" for the annual
social gathering, and later in the play "Man from
Jericho". He enacted the role of a damsel in both
presentations at Monte de Guirim. He also
participated in the school choir as well as in
cultural programmes. His favourite liking was to sing
songs and doing imitations/ mimicry. He composed his
first song "Sounsarachea Adnixt" at the age of 10, and
he sang it repeatedly for almost a decade on several
occasions. Sanny studied Automoble Engineering at
ITI, Formaguddi and joined "Agencia Sequeira (Leyland
Co.)" in 1975. In search of better prospects, he
travelled to Saudi Arabia where he worked until August
1998. After a gap of three months, opportunity again
knocked on his door, and he landed in Kuwait and
joined a Japanese Automobile firm, and continues to
reside since. It was in 2000, he once again took to
the Konkani stage for Laurent Pereira's drama and
since have
composed and sang his own songs and also assisted his
colleagues (be it prompting, direction or revising
scripts).

Sanny remembers his earliest performance in "Vepari
Veniceacho" (Merchant of Venice) - a Konkani play
translated by Miss Amelia Gomes and directed by Peter
Dias where he played a comedy role. He acted in every
drama that took place in Quepem or in the surrounding
villages for Konkani tiatrs. It was at this junction
he started his career with the professional directors
like Jess Fernandes, along with Hortencio Pereira,
Salvador, Natty de Navelim, Nora, Cajetan de
Sanvordem, and C. D'Silva. This was the turning point
for Sanny when he was auditioned for singing at the
All India Radio (AIR), Panjim when he was recording
for Jess Fernandes Konkani radio recorded plays. For
a brief stint in Bombay (Mumbai) in 1975, Sanny sang
at Banghwadi when he was introduced by his cousin (who
played bass) to Paul Romy who staged a musical show.

Before flying to Saudi Arabia, Sanny acted in his home
village for Felix Pereira's tiatr "Rogtak Rogot
Visronam" and finally at Colva (1977) for "Doganch
Puru" written and directed by Nelson
(Nelson-Anthony-Conception fame). For the annual Kala
Academy tiatr competitions, he was rewarded for his
dedication towards singing Konkani songs and have
acted twice for Ceasar D'Mello. Even while on
vacation he participated in the Konkani singing
competitions in 1986 and won the award as the Best
Singer for the eight time.

A man of few words, he humbly states "I do not
consider myself as an actor, but can convincingly do
small roles. I am good at singing and composing
solos". On and off, he is seen on the Konkani stage
in Kuwait as part of a duo or a trio songs
combination. At last week's Konkani drama of Rosary
Ferns' "Bhurgim - Mai-Paichem Sukh" his song saluting
the work of "Aya" (Maid) received a thunderous
applause, as well as for his acting as a mentally
challenged boy. His song "Kazar" in Rosary Ferns'
"Raag" Konkani Album has been well received. Sanny
recalls that apart from tiatr he sang for a Hindi
orchestra (songs and medleys), as well as crooned for
a dance band "Young Challengers" for some time. He is
thankful to Mr. & Mrs. Albano Pinto for introducing
him to writer-director Laurent Pereira, for whom he
expresses his gratitude for giving him a big boost.

Sanny can recollect with sharp precision events he had
witnessed in his younger days including the happenings
during the pre and post liberation years in his
village during his schooling days. When time permits
from his hectic office routine, Sanny writes for the
Gulf-Goans e-Newsletter under the caption
<Cross+Roads>, as well as other articles on Goanet and
The Goan Forum. His well composed songs on social
themes including "Immigation to England", "Mog" are
well remembered by the audience. His desire is to
release a Konkani album of his collection of songs
shortly. Here's wishing Sanny all the very best.

Gaspar Almeida
Associate, www.goa-world.com 20/8/2005Goa-World.COMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02905034224348483211noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2023348135057904193.post-57226468867935694802007-12-17T02:16:00.000-08:002007-12-24T01:01:05.302-08:00MANUEL DE SANTA CRUZ<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVq2ijH7VwVeE1PdbQPhDzUl-N8SvMW9Q72LPoQre2xhX9NhP1aMbHIPek6jmsinDgUN3NY7EQI6I3JS4tH4SEsi9TeE3j9eZakIO4XQj12aS3YmDz09Y0xbLBsChkAna7IEhN4kr4wz3k/s200/Manual.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5145225155127474226" />
Manuel de Santa Cruz

Manuel Francisco Xavier Fernandes hails from Kalapura
(Santa Cruz, Tiswadi). Born on Christmas Day in 1945,
he is the son of late Diogo Alfredo do Rosario
Fernandes and late Maria Zoraida Elvira Germack de
Souza. Manuel studied Portuguese (Primeiro and Segundo
Grau) in the village school and later at Liceu
Nacional Afonso de Albuquerque at Panjim (now Panaji)
where he studied upto Terceiro Anno (Third Year).
Consequent upon liberation of Goa in December 1961,
"Liceu National Afonso de Albuquerque" was affiliated
to Delhi Board of Higher Secondary Examination where
he completed his Std. XI, Manuel proudly reminenses.

>From an early age, he had the interest to act and sing
on stage. It was in 1959 that he was given an
opportunity by late Florence Fernandes in his tiatr
“Atam Sampodlo” as a child artiste. Since then, his
passion for the Konkani stage increased in leaps and
bounds. Every ward (vaddo) in Santa Cruz village
organized one tiatr practically all year round. Santo
Agostinho Ward was not having any tiatr and Manuel
approached other wards to cast him in their tiatr.
They were not interested to absorb him citing the
reason that he does not belong to their ward and this
led Manuel to try and present a tiatr all by himself
and he took up this challenge.

On 1st January 1967, with the assistance of fellow
artist Hilario do Rego, he jointly wrote and directed
his first tiatr “Axec Lagon” in his Santo Agostinho
Vaddo (Maddir). He showed his acting and singing
caliber in his tiatr “Axec Lagon” and the audience
heaped praises on him. Having been successful in his
first venture he penned and directed another tiatr
“Pissudlelem Kalliz” on 28th May 1967 followed by
“Maim-Sunn” on 10th December 1967, three tiatrs in a
row in the same year which was a hat trick. He
recollects the tremors that followed on the night of
December 10th, which shook the whole of Goa and the
Koyna region.

Manuel was well noticed at this junction and the
writers and directors who once refused to cast him in
their plays offered pivotal roles in many tiatrs held
in Santa Cruz and its vicinity. He is well remembered
for his tiatr “Bhau-Bhau ani Zau-Zau” which the
audience rated as his one of the best.

His interest in social work at the village level as
well as his keenness to support social causes and
justice to his fellow villagers at every level took to
him to the charms of politics. He canvassed
extensively for the separate identity of Goa and
toured all North Goa during the Opinion Poll and
addressed public meetings along with United Goans
stalwarts such as Dr. Jack de Sequeira, Erasmo
Sequeira, Ananta Narcinva Naik, Orlando Sequeira Lobo,
Jagdish Rao, to mention few which brought him to lime
light and he gained name and fame as an orator at the
tender age of 22 years.

In year 1968 Manuel took up a job as a “Lighthouse
Keeper” in the Captain of Ports and soon thereafter
worked in the Secretariat as a "LD Clerk" in various
Departments. Politics was the second passion for him
and he made up his mind to contest the Goa Assembly
elections in the year 1972 as an Independent candidate
from Santa Cruz Assembly Constituency and for this he
sacrificed his job at the Secretariat. He received
good number of votes (4,483), but for a simple young
man that he was, Manuel could not defeat the very
influential Dr. Jack de Sequeira. Until this stage
(1972), no independent candidate garnered this many
votes in any constituency in Goa.

Later it was another political leader, the late
Dayanand Bandodkar (Bahusaheb) who absorbed Manuel in
his “Orient (Goa) Pvt. Ltd. Company where he worked as
a Senior Assistant. After exactly three and half
years, opportunity knocked on his door and he was
selected for the post of an “Executive” in D. B.
Bandodkar & Sons Company where he devoted his services
until February 1982. He continued to act and sing in
several tiatrs as the acting talents were in born in
his blood.

A new genre of tiatr in the form of Khell-tiatr were
presented and it was in the late 1970’s that such
presentations were receiving attention. Alexander
Noronha selected Manuel for a powerful role, which
revolved around the story theme in “Ekvottan Somplo”
khell-tiatr. Manuel has also acted in several tiatrs
written and directed by Peter Barbosa, Frank de Santa
Cruz, Candido Araujo etc. It was now for Manuel to
show his talents to the judges and the audience at the
annual Kala Academy Tiatr competitions. It was for
Caetano Pereira’s “Tukaim Tench” and “Ugdass” Tiatrs
and Peter Barbosa’s "Asro" tiatr in which Manuel was
adjudged the "Best Actor". His name figures
prominently in the Kala Academy's Competitions Record
Book.

In 1981, Manuel acted as “Batkar (Landlord)” in
Ping-Pong Rod (Lawrence Rod’s) tiatr at Aldona-Carona.
It would interesting to mention that without a single
practice he played the role to perfection. He just
read the script once and everything was done
immaculately in detail. In continuation of his
interest in politics, he was elected to represent
Santo Agostinho-Ubo Dando Ward 5 of Santa Cruz Village
Panchayat.

It was in March 1982, he looked for better pastures
and landed in Kuwait. He was elected, as Member of the
newly formed Goan Welfare Society (GWS)-Kuwait in 1989
and has been a committee member for several years
until recently. He worked for a major Trading Company
as a “Commercial Assistant” and while he was on
vacation the invasion of Kuwait took place. At this
point, he provided his full support towards the
movement in support of Kuwait condemning the invasion.
He rendered valuable support and assisted in whatever
way he could.

Upon his return to Kuwait in 1992, he continued his
passion for the Konkani stage and it was for Kuwait
Konkni Kendr (KKK’s) Songit Sanz (Musical Evening)
where he was bestowed the pen-name "Manuel de Santa
Cruz". He acted for Kala Mogui Kuwait's one act
Konkani play "Mafi Magtam" (December 2002) written and
directed by Dominic Araujo in which he did a memorable
role as "Mama" (Paternal Uncle). Yet another
performance worth mentioning was for United Club of
Utorda's 2nd One Act Play Competition, also directed
by Dominic Araujo and written by Maria Esteves titled
"Ho Niah Koslo?". Since then on and off he has acted
in Konkani tiatrs and musical shows.

Manuel was also elected as a Managing Committee Member
of Kuwait-Goa Tiatristanchi Sonvstha (KGTS) and has
sung in the first KGTS Musical Show "Tiatr Ani
Tiatrist".

While on vacation in Goa in December 1999, with the
assistance of Joaquim Jose Fernandes and fellow
villagers of Santo Agostinho Vaddo, he scripted and
directed his tiatr “Vegglozar” which was part of the
program presented by Santo Agostinho Vaddo during the
Christmas Season. I have assisted several amateur as
well as professional tiatrists to edit and script
their tiatrs, he recalls.

Manuel has two daughters and a son. I have a lovely
grand-daughter and a son-in-law, he smiles. He is well
supported by his wife, Espy, throughout his long
career.

Manuel has been well appreciated by the Konkani tiatr
lovers in Kuwait for his meticulous acting - the most
recent one being Rosary Ferns' "Bhurgim - Mai-Paichem
Sukh" (August 2005). A special mention is made here
that he supports the organizers and even donates
towards their efforts - his valuable time as well as
monetarily. He was also featured in Marcus Vaz' tiatr
"Almachea Disa" (Sept. 2004).

"A tiatr is not only drama, or only music or only
comedy; it is a fine mixture of all the above
ingredients - drama, music, comedy and improvisation.
Appropriate blended music provided by a brass band is
a noteworthy element of this popular art form. I am
happy to see more of the brass band and blowing
instruments for a tiatr or a Konkani Musical. Tiatr
has today evolved as a powerful medium for mass
communication", Manuel remarks. "We should continue to
demand more support from the Goa Government as well as
from the Central Government. Why shouldn't the State
Language of Goa and the Konkani Romi Script be
supported at par with the Devnagri script?"

He is hailed by none other than the Konkani writer and
collector of Konkani books and archives, Brazinho
Soares (Kalapurkar) as "A versatile actor and a good
tiatr writer and director" in his article published in
Goa's only Konkani monthly publication "GULAB" under
the caption "Manuel Fernandes - Boro tiatr-borovpi,
Voznadik bhumika korpi".

He has been featured in T-Bush's first Konkani e-cinema
"BLACK Nhesop Atanchem Fashion" in a role of a priest,
which he did with graceful and tact.

"I will continue with my passion for acting and will
also, God willing, produce and direct tiatrs, when I
return back to Goa", Manuel says it with pride. "Some
professional tiatrists have recently offered to have
him in their troupes", he laughs mischeviously. And waits for no-one. Respect time or be the one to succumb
to the whims and fancies of time. This is the vital theme of the new Konkani
VCD Film aptly titled "Chovis Voram" " 24 Hours" which keeps the audience
spellbound throughout the film, till it reaches its stunning climax. The VCD
Film is a Rock & Ranga presentation under Averly Productions banner, written
and directed by Simon Gonsalves. The VCD was Released at the hands of Gasper
Almeida of Goa-World.com who also holds the post of being the General
Secretary of the Goan Welfare Society (GWS) Kuwait , at a glittering function
held at The Royal Terrasse Restaurant on the 9th of August admist invitees and
special guests. Gasper in his speech, complimented Simon Gonsalves and
thanked him for giving him the honour of releasing his maiden Venture Film"
Chovis Voram". Gaspar also pledged to support and extended co-operation to
the tiatrist fraternity at all time.

The story which revolves around a rich family with the head of the family
always underlining the importance of time. While In sharp contrast his
reckless son on the other hand disagrees with his fathers principles and by
passes the opportunities of time. The daughter on the other hand, loves her
brother very much, but, at the same time, is in love with a poor and
physically disabled (with one hand only)boy. When the brother comes to know
about his sisters love affair, he goes bonkers and viciously hatches a plot
to kill her lover. How the conspiracy is hacked and the suspense unfolds at
the end is worth watching. The story takes a momentous diversion to unfold the
next "Chovis Voram" in the film. Twenty four hour can turn out to be bliss or
may end in a tragedy. The film is a must see for all lovers of Konkani
language.

The VCD film is produced by Rajesh A. Bhosale and filmed by Spirit at
beautiful and scerenic locations. The background music by Nelvil Fernandes is
enthralling to the ears. The actors have performed well and given their best.
Comedy scenes are also rib tickling, particularly, the scene in which, it
highlights that, in olden times, swine butchers used to hunt and trap pigs
with hounds but, now the modus operandi has shifted to modern technology, like
the Mobile telephones to hunt and capture the pigs.

The dialogues are also exceptionally penned. Simon Gonsalves has done well in
his maiden venture and deserves appreciation for the hard work and dedication
he has put in making this movie a reality. The film has been completed in a
record time, and kudos to the artist and all those involved in making the film
either on screen or behind the curtain or in front of the camera. Their
efforts will never go wasted as the film is doing good in Kuwait and gradually
will catch the hearts of Konkani Lovers.

Simon Gonsalves will be staging Konkani Religious Drama during Lent season,
titled "Chalis Dis Chalis Rati" in the coming year 2007. While the wait is
long, Take a deep breath and enjoy "Chovis Voram".

(Extract from The Times (Kuwait) / 1-7 Sept. 2006 / Page 2)Goa-World.COMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02905034224348483211noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2023348135057904193.post-26969189848873308912007-12-17T01:49:00.000-08:002008-01-13T03:27:55.614-08:00KATTY DE NAVELIM<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHxUUPqxkfguPT9p1uciqL7GtqqPqa_h288GvJ_LU3VvxOSlm_7pDHL8FLEqu8fKhfFlEUd743qV8OCaBFW0D95zeCT7xBaqJfJ7u9G_W6PQv_FXouLgZeh6Jq_lAUqTLmOMOaQUF1USG1/s320/kathy.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5154921374510683442" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjKn41RFqaA4YuTNvqLZJXXyzsjaTXrdUDZCPbUIvjtP04WJ-bQvKPdH7BSAEqz-YJHmefEa8EgDY4n__va6Cq4avC1i7xoZaJxUnCnHtqt-4oGqFXz2En7Q1URcGGnKMYMfwQyvt5Y4Qq/s200/kattydenavelim1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5145249902729033986" />
KATTY DE NAVELIM
- A talented singer and composer

Since 2001 he is regularly seen on stage in Kuwait -
be it a Konkani drama or a musical show or a Goa Day
celebrations. Just recently he has been elected the
President of the popular and the only organization in
the Gulf region of the tiatrists' faternity - Kuwait
Goa Tiatristanchi Sonvstha (KGTS). He is non other
than Mario Carneiro who goes by the alais "Katty de
Navelim". Katty started his singing career as a child
artiste while he was just in primary school. His
singing talents were duly recognized when he
participated in competitions held by the Cavellosim
Parish Youth. This encouragement took him to sing at
Kala Academy programmes and even to All India Radio
(AIR) at a very young age.

Katty has acted for Patrick Perry, C.D'Silva, Patrick
Dourado and others all over Goa. He has also penned
and directed his only Konkani tiatr titled "Tuca Favo
Naslem" which was performed in Assagao in Bardez and
at Tilamol in Quepem taluka, for the church feasts way
back in 1977.

Just a fortnight back (15th September 2006) he
released his second Konkani album in Kuwait titled
"Ugddas Tumcho" produced by MANFA Music (Goa). He had
presented his debut Konkani Album "Dennem" in 2002 -
also produced by MANFA Music (Goa).

"Both my albums have been well received. I thank all
Konkani lovers for the support and encouragement they
gave me", Katty shyly comments. Further elaborating
on both the albums, he says "I must confess that both
title songs in the two albums are my best favourites,
so also the song "Ashram" in "Ugddas Tumcho". Katty
further states "As mentioned in the Album covers, all
lyrics are penned by me".

"Although I landed in Kuwait a long while ago, I took
a long gap, i.e. for almost 19 years (1982-2001), I
did not act or sing on stage". With a force within
himself, he confidently managed to go back to his most
favourite hobby, i.e. singing on stage in "Ti Mojie
Mai" written by Patrick Dourado and directed by Tony
Dias in 2001. "I am grateful to my brother Morris
Carneiro and my family who have always supported my
singing art". He also participated in Patrick
Dourado's drama "Tujem Rogot" in April 2004 organized
by Navelim Youth Centre in Kuwait. "I was honoured and
privilege to sing a "duo" with Patrick Dourado.
Interestingly though, this was the very first time in
a career spanning over 90 dramas that Patrick Dourado
was seen on stage singing"!

Katty, together with Kuwait-based talented Konkani
stage artistes - Simon Gonsalves and Joseph Rodrigues
- have formed a trio! Since the last two years, this
trio has been making waves with songs specially penned
by Katty. Last year, it was a song "Palkacho Divo"
sung on the Goa's most famous "Trio Kings" at the
Kuwait Goa Tiatristanchi Sonvsta (KGTS) annual musical
show "Ostad Tiatrist" which was emotionally
acknowledged by "Anthony of Trio Kings fame" as well
sung and well written. Anthony himself announced on
stage after the song rendition that "this trio song"
will be included in their Trio Kings' forthcoming
Konkani VCD.

Born and brought up in Navelim, Salcette, Katty has
attended his primary education in Rosary High
School-Navelim and later as a boarder at St. Britto's
High School, Mapusa. After obtaining his Industrial
Training Diploma in Plumbing (Govt.of India) at
Margao, he obtained his Public Works Department (PWD)
licence. Presently in Kuwait he works for the well
known Arabi Holding Group as a Senior Irrigation and
Mechanical Supervisor at the construction projects
(sites) - both for the private sector and government
projects.

In the past decade, Katty has been elected as the
President, Sports Secretary as well as the General
Secretary of Navelim Youth Centre-Kuwait. With Kuwait
Indian Football Federation (KIFF) he was elected the
"Sports Secretary" for three years and as "Registrar"
for two years. When the www.goa-world.com team met
him after his election as KGTS President, he mentioned
that he keeps himself abreast of the happenings among
the Goans - be it on the sports as well as on the
tiatr circuit.

While keeping on track with the brief questions we put
across to Katty......
"Socio-economic growth of the Goan community through
the Konkani language and Romi script is the only way
to ensure a bright future and unity in Goa!".
"I hate those who write controversial and unfounded
stories on fellow tiatrists and Goans - specially
those who contribute towards the tiatr, konkani, and
social spheres in Kuwait".
While concluding this brief interview, Katty smiles:
"I will endeavour to keep the Kuwait-Goa Tiatristanchi
Sonvstha's (KGTS') flag flying high. KGTS upcoming
programme in the new year will be a grand one as in
the past three years".
"My grateful thanks to all my fans, Navelim villagers,
fellow tiatrists, supporters and well-wishers".
"Keep up the good work you and Ulysses Menezes
together with your team are doing by forwarding the
Gulf-Goans e-Newsletter regularly".
I like the goa-world.com website and specially Konkani
online music station".
"You guys are much ahead of everyone. I think
www.goa-world.com has the largest collection of
information on tiatr and tiatrists". Tumcam Dev borem
korum.

Well, thanks Katty, we appreciate the kind words. It's very
exciting to watch the development of a musical show
right before your eyes. It's a window straight into
the creative minds on-stage as performed by Kuwait's
best Konkani stage artistes and the finest among the
Goan community here, popularly known as "Tiatrists"
this week. That was really kind of magical and
wonderful in itself as the mega musical show "Tiatr
Ani Tiatrist" unfolded to the audience, organized by
Kuwait-Goa Tiatristanchi Sonstha (KGTS) - the largest
premiere dramatists association of the Goans in Kuwait
in association with Goan Welfare Society (GWS). This
musical extravaganza -an abbreviated but always
humorously intended look back at tiatrs and tiatrists
(dramatists) art of the last hundred plus years- in
[just over] 4 hours 15 minutes. Showcasing young
talents with the versatile professional ones (all
members of KGTS) on a high priority with the best
combination of vocalists, singers, actors, actresses
and musicians to the stage, there were also comedy
skits and sketches, and of course, music by the 22 men
orchestra. Under the direction of Tony Coutinho,
Faustino (trumpet) and the ever popular Soccor D'Mello
(guitar), with Juju (saxophone), Agnelo Dias (trumpet)
and Luis Rodrigues (trumpet) – all flown from Goa.
Kuwait-based musicians Ben, Jhovy, Joel (guitar),
Denis (bass guitar), Agnelo (drums), Francis,
Flaviano, Menino (percussion), Chaminda (octopad),
Philip, Shahu, Syham (keyboard), Frederico, Marlinda
(piano), Mahadev (flute), David (violin); with digital
sound provided by Spiders added to the orchestra's
resounding effects. Lighting was used effectively and
the stage was utilized to the maximum. Among the
seniormost Goan artistes specially flown in from Goa
and Mumbai were illustrious Remmie Colaco, Anthony of
Trio Kings fame, together with Jr. Rod, Joe Rose and
Joa quim as well as Peter-Roshan and Comedian
Domnic. The show commenced at 3:45 p.m. with the
inauguration of the photo gallery of the famous
tiatrists of yesteryears in their fond rememberance at
the hands of Derrick Mendes (son of late Anthony
Mendes). A brief introduction of KGTS president
Francis de Verna followed, who highlighted KGTS
founder Marcus Vaz, and thanked all those who
contributed towards Rosario Rodigues for his medical
expenses. A cheque of Rs. 96,000/-. It would be worth
mentioning that this fund was collected from Konkani
lovers without organizing a show or a tiatr. The
inaugural group song by Junifer Rod, Marcus Vaz,
Francis de Verna, and Cajetan de Sanvordem with a
chorus by Clifford-Jonathan-Terence, Manuel de Santa
Cruz, Jose Rod, Sylvester Vaz, and Domnic Araujo. The
re-enactment of the age old carnival 'khell' (street
play) titled "Put Mumbai Voita" directed by Junifer
Rod caught the attention of the audience reminiscing
the now-extinct carnival tradition of South Goa. The
cast included Lucas Deniz, Comedian Nelson, Comedian
Philip, Anthony Carr, Martinho Martins, Mario de
Majorda, and Jose Anthony. Seniormost artiste, Remmie
Colaco, aged 79 years, from Sanvordem, received a
thunderous applause. In his inimitable style a song
entitled "Goenkarponn" was sung by him with the grace
and perfection. Laurente Pereira and Gracy Morais
were impressive in their 'duet' rendition. This was
followed by comedy skit by well known comedians
Nelson-Philip-Mario. Ketty de Navelim was his usual
best in his solo. Joe Rose's "Preparation-Separation"
was well received whereas Cajetan-Marcus-Mario trio's
song on the Almighty's might over mankind. Comedian
Domnic and Party has the audience in peels of laughter
in their comedy skit. Peter-Roshan's introduction to
the audience for the first time in Kuwait was a
welcome change and their duet "Maico-Paico" had a good
effect, well worded and rhymed. From Goa, the direct
relay of interviews of retired tiatrists, Rom Tony,
Master Vaz and M.Boyer was something novice to the
tiatr audience. Well done, Augusto Morias! So also
was the clipping on Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh
Khan, dubbed in Konkani with an interesting theme on
'Sour Ground'. And the crowd just loved it. The
play directed by Jose Rod, with Cajetan de Sanvordem,
Gracy Morais, Laurente Pereira, Domnic Araujo was very
well done. The trio kings – from the set of 9 artistes
specially flown from Goa - Anthony-Jr.Rod-Joaquim
reminded of the sacrifices made by "M.K. Gandhi" to
live in harmony. "Ami Touristam" by Joe Rose and
Peter-Roshan, duo by Slyvester Vaz and Laurente
Pereira, and solo by Comedian Domnic winded up the
first session of the musical with an innovative idea
of combining the same a la "Aiwa" advertisement. It
was pleasant to see the third generation youngsters
willingness to continue in the tradition for which
KGTS and other Konkani-promoting organizations. Kudos
to their parents as well as all those who compose
songs, train and give the youngsters a helping hand to
shine on the Konkani stage. During the break-time, a
game of bingo was conducted. Vincent D'Cunha was
declared the winner for the 25" Television set. The
second part continued with Mario de Colva and Joe
Frank's duo, followed by a duet by Slyvester Vaz and
Gracy Morais. The comedy skit by Domnic and Party
took away the strength of laughing more! Remmie
Colaco's "Mai Paichea Khoxt" had a good moral for the
youth. Bi-lingual "Love Song" by Jose Rod had the
ingredients of his trade mark composition and voice
modulation. The video clippings and jokes continued so
also the solos by Comedian Philip, Jr. Rod, Roshan,
and Joe Rose, in addition to Peter-Roshan's duet
titled "Fashion" and the trio kings traditional
hallmark of "xupatteo" songs. The houseful audience
could not believe when the concluding "The End" re-run
of the "Aiwa" advertisement was shown, as they
expected more! The proceeds of the musical show was
donated by KGTS to the welfare of the retired artistes
namely Rom Tony (Goa), Mary Vaz (Goa) - wife of late
Jacinto Vaz, Prem Kumar (Mumbai), Paul Romy (Mumbai)
and John Nazareth (Kuwait) as a tribute of love.
Other KGTS members under its fold include Milagres de
Benaulim, Santana Afonso, Remy Rebelo, and Zoro. The
concluding comedy item – the silent act – was a
delight to watch with Comedian Domnic, Mario de
Majorda and Comedian Philip.

At a separate dinner hosted in honour of the visiting
artistes and musicians , members of the orchestra and
families of KGTS members, KGTS felicitated Remmie
Colaco. Mementos were bestowed on the visiting
artistes as well as individual gifts presented to all
members of the orchestra. T-Bush, the silent
supporter of the tiatrist's faternity who specializes
in designing audio and CD artwork, publicity leaflets
as well as computer generated video clippings, was
also felicitated on the occasion. All said and done,
it's not too surprising to note that hundreds of hits
were recorded on the KGTS website after the show

http://www.geocities.com/kgts_10/Home.html . I will
not be astonished if the other artistes of the
tiatrist's faternity join the KGTS to make it one of
the biggest entities of like-minded association in the
history of "Tiatr Ani Tiatrist" not only in Kuwait,
but worldwide. Director T-Bush uses
wit and humour and gives the entire film a twist here
and a twist there, keeping the suspense of what's to
come next.

The twirl in the story comes in the form of two sons
based in Kuwait and the ploy they adopt to drive a
wedge between themselves, the sons with their spouses
and the parents back in Goa - the reason being not
appreciating and being ashamed of the traditional
family 'profession'. The screenplay relies heavily on
appealing dialogues and various 'comedy'
relationships in the film to put forth the basic
story, complete with appropriate song sequences. The
approach that the Director uses is different,
interesting and entertaining. It is an all and all out
comedy.

The film "BLACK" has been directed by the award
winning filmmaker, T-BUSH, and the star cast
comprises (listed in alphabetical order) of: Abby
Periera, Agnello A.S. Fernandes, Albino Lawrence,
Babit Dourado, Braz de Parra, Cajetan de Sanvordem,
Carl Rodrigues, Clara Rodrigues, Conchita Cardoz,
Carmo Santos, Diana Rodrigues, Dominic Araujo, Francis
de Verna, Francis Menezes, Gaspar Almeida, Gracy
Morais, Helen Pinto, Ignatius de Xelvon, Irene Vaz,
Jeremiah Vaz, Joe Fereira, Joseph Rodrigues, Julio
Cardozo, Kevin Vaz, Katty de Navelim, Laurent Periera,
Laurie Miranda, Luis D’Costa, Manuel de Santa Cruz,
Mabel, Marina D’Souza, Mario de Majorda, Nasser, Neeta
Fernandes, Nelson Colaco, Nicholas Rodrigues, Nitin
Castelino, Olinda Dias, Philip Periera, Philomena,
Qeurobina Carvalho, Riana Azavedo, Roullond Fernandes,
Rowla Lewis, Salu Faleiro, Sandra Fernandes, Sharon
Fernandes, Simon Dias, Simon Gonsalves, Cisco, Late
Sunny de Quepem, Sylvester Vaz, Vicky Vaz, and Zoro.

The film belongs to the comedy genre and is set in
Goa and Kuwait. The music composed by Norman Cardoz,
Goa's finest talented musician, and lyrics by Braz de
Parra. “BLACK” has an interesting script,
entertaining screenplay and T-BUSH's execution and
portrayal of the different characters and his choice
of the cast is really commendable and had deligently
carried the film on his shoulders with adequate flair.
T-BUSH has chosen an interesting setting and has
made use of wit and humour immensely well which
enlivens and enriches the film to a great extent.
It’s the first Indian film to be shoot in Kuwait. The
director has etched out the real life angle too within
the story with a unique flair lending it immense
dignity and maturity. The continuity sequences are a
treat to the eyes.

T-BUSH has managed to give the majority of the
first timers who have faced the camera the same edge
that the other characters of professional stage actors
would have. The film entertains its audiences to an
extent with its sharp and witty dialogues. The climax
is acceptable and the cinematography too is eye
pleasing, with English subtitles. Music is soft and
charming which matches the theme of "BLACK" and
performances are good, enhancing the film in a great
way.

At the commencement, the organizers at Friday's (30th
Nov.) show had a small introductory ceremony compered
by Gaspar Crasto during which Cajetan Pereira and
Querobina Carvalho - were introduced to the audience.
The guests of honour Rev. Fr. Lionel Braganza,
Principal of Don Bosco School (IEAS)-Kuwait and TV,
stage, Durdarshan and Zee TV personality Arif Kazi
paid glowing tributes to T-BUSH. A one minute silence
was observed in fond rememberance of late Sanny Vaz
(de Quepem). His presence in the 'BLACK' film will
forever keep his memory alive as in his audio albums.
A commemorative souvenir was released to mark the
occasion. 'BLACK' was premiered in Kuwait on 10th
August 2007 in the presence of H.E. The Ambassador of
India M.Ganapati in a glittering ceremony, and
Friday's was the third screening in Kuwait. According
to well-placed sources, plans are to have it screened
in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, U.A.E., Canada,
U.K. and U.S.A. and in India (Goa, Mumbai, Pune,
Mangalore, Delhi, Ahmedabad and Bangalore) in the
first quarter of 2008.

"BLACK" being a film which may be watched after a long
interval - as Konkani films are a rarity - I am
positive that the technique and the technologically
advanced systems incorporated in filming and
production as well as sound effects in 'BLACK' with
the e-cinema concept will have T-BUSH kept on the
pedestal of being the first for this achievement.

As T-BUSH at the commencement of the screening
emphasized in a two line statement, "As I have
mentioned at the premiere show, you have to view
'BLACK' with your heart. I hope you will do so this
time".
Indeed it had to be, and knowing the talented
resourceful T-BUSH - a man of few words, I did.

Kuwait, 3/12/2007
(c) All rights reserved, www.goa-world.com

1ST KONKANI MUSIC STATION ONLINE NON-STOP AT YOUR DESKTOP
http://www.goa-world.com/goa/music/

Links: www.t-bush.comGoa-World.COMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02905034224348483211noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2023348135057904193.post-42614354554133139002007-12-17T01:41:00.000-08:002007-12-18T00:49:37.226-08:00A tribute to Fr. Freddy J. Da Costa
- Gaspar Almeida

The unexpected death of Fr. Freddy J. Da Costa has
deprived the Goans and the Church of one of its most
gifted priests. He was a man of integrity and
transparency who was an exemplary parish priest at
several Goan parishes, a teacher at the Seminary and
an adviser to the die-hard Konkani enthusiasts.

Fr. Freddy had an easy manner and was at home with
people from every walk of life. He had the gift of
making you feel that you were the most important
person in the world when talking with him. A person
of great seriousness but at the same time extreme good
humour, Fr. Freddy was ever ready to defend his
strongly held Catholic beliefs but was also gracious
companion, a reconciler who believed in the 'dignity
of differences'. Those who worked with him found Fr.
Freddy a loyal and trusted colleague. He had an
incisive mind and the gift of clearly explaining
difficult concepts and issues of importance to the
community.

"I am deeply saddened by the tragic death of Fr.
Freddy. He was a generous, selfless and brilliant
man, who was one of the finest people I have had the
pleasure of knowing. He will be remembered for his 22
years of dedication to his much cherished 'GULAB' -
the only roman script Konkani family magazine. My
three page Konkani article "Politics of the Olympic
Games" in GULAB issue of April 1986 was published by
him without even editing a word. So also were my
reports on the sports, cultural and social activities
of the Goans in Kuwait.

Fr. Freddy had a great generosity of grace and
understanding. His deep pastoral sensitivity gave him
an insight into many people's lives, with whom he
developed strong and trustworthy friendships. The
Church has lost a much loved priest and, for so many
of us, Konkani lovers, the tiatrist faternity, the
musicians, the Konkani authors, a true and loyal
friend. We will miss him terribly, but in his great
works - GULAB, Konkani publications, audio cassettes,
etc., Fr. Freddy will always be remembered by all
Goans and Konkani lovers.

Gaspar Almeida
Associate, www.goa-world.comGoa-World.COMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02905034224348483211noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2023348135057904193.post-74308235607396672082007-12-17T01:39:00.001-08:002007-12-18T01:28:57.098-08:00IT'S FINALLY COME TO THIS<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrzxxuLx8c5t_Ny07GaJhqg7O-FJEwd-Qjk4flTlX_eCFTNLM8xxKA7dgtROWEsUQjOd0mBtqOkMI1-EE_Cg5TEjpSWVo-0_JKUm6ToCe2OSiJ-rKmufyPreEaKOFBjjBzE_HR7zBtq4k9/s200/665893743105_0_ALB.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5145242515385284834" />
"It’s finally come to this"
- by Almeida Gaspar

I laughed when I saw the headline "Authors Giving
Themselves Good Reviews." The article originated from
the New York Times News (wire) Service. This means
folks all over the world now know there are quite a
few writers "pseudonymously" touting their own books
in the reader reviews section of Internet bookseller
Amazon.

Well, we have known over the years, there is a
similarity here too, among our very vibrant community.
This does reflect on some Goans. We have plenty of
them among our midst, some innocently genuine, some
laughing away with innocence, with a mischeivous grin.
Last year a well scripted and directed tiatr had good
reviews. Recently Cecil Pinto's observations - a lot
of tiatr oddities have vanished - are indeed true.
But, although some of these oddities are dead, there
are some new ones 'cultivated' and they like weeds are
'sowing' the seeds of defamation and abuse.

Recently (accidentally) one such individual who is
also a member of an association which promote art and
stage artistes, faxed an item from a defense
consulting office. This opened the whole 'pandora's
box' without an iota of doubt, leaving the person
defenceless. Who said only IP addresses can be
located? Fax IDs and like as in the 90's the famous
IBM typewriter's fonts could be traced from a Shuwaikh
garage to the newspaper's editors office.

Self glorifying as well as showering praises (as if
one is about to be nominated for an Oscar for NOTHING)
on others is the work of the bald, confused and the
bearded. Some are cowards who proclaim self
discipline, openness and like-minded, are also in the
fray. We all know well who these characters are. Like
the Konkani saying goes thus: "Padricho sermao vonneak
nhoi". At an appropriate time, we will get these
individuals exposed, the head of our 'investigating
team' concluded.

Coming to the few writers "pseudonymously" making
themselves heard or gain popularity, some people do
not like this practice, believing that it is, as one
writer said, "a rhetorical war," where authors—and, in
some cases, their friends and family— write good
reviews to rebut the bad ones, which may or may not
come from the writers’ enemies.

While people who legitimately read the book or go for
a tiatr, or a football final, ostensibly write reviews
both positive and negative, the idea that a writer
would pen his own praise is somewhat
distasteful—mostly to those who don’t know how tough
the business is.

A few like-minded fellows, we have observed, are among
us on the forums. They praise themselves as well as
their buddies after even a 'condolence meeting' in
their reports. This is a very frightening trend to the
average Goan who 'once in a while' read such postings
on the Goan internet forums.

Going back to my opening paragraph above..... Which is
what struck me funny about the article’s headline. My
first thought upon reading it was, "It’s finally come
to this."

It’s no surprise that writers have to use such
seemingly sneaky tactics to get their names and
devilish ideas out there. It’s part of the evolution
of the modern world. Those who do win the veritable
lottery of acquiring an agent, then a publisher, then
a couple dozen hardback copies are also required to be
marketing geniuses when publishers don’t have adequate
funds to publicize the work. So, while authors
reluctantly take on self-promotion as a necessary
marketing technique, others think they’re blowing
their own horns for the sake of popularity. Yet, we
in the biz know that these Amazon infiltrators really
aren’t any different from job hunters that puff up
their résumés.

And now....... having written a mystery novel "To
Kiteak Nachlo Nam?" in amchi maim bhas Konkani for
which I am seeking a publisher, I wonder if I will
eventually get that "reader in Candolim" who
anonymously submits a good review or the LRNB
"dusreanchea nanvant fax/email dadpi" from Quepem,
Bardez, Ilhas,...... oh, the list ends at Salcette!
I doubt it, may be these are "Migrated Goans" ? I’ll
probably just get my colleagues or the several heads
of the Goan organizations in the Gulf region to do
it...... if such trend becomes the 'in thing' for
everyone.

Almeida Gaspar
www.goa-world.com

LRNB = Lippon Raupi Nettar BoroupiGoa-World.COMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02905034224348483211noreply@blogger.com0
